Lincolnton’s Katherine Hopkins dominated from start to finish to claim the individual state championship at the 2A State Cross-Country Meet at Ivey Redmon Park in Kernersville on Saturday.
“Katherine is a remarkable athlete who holds nothing back when it comes to going after her goals,” said Lincolnton cross-country coach Brad McKee. “After a season ending injury last year she came back with more determination and more grit with one goal in mind, ‘State title,’ and she did just that. She exemplifies perfectly a quote by the popular runner Steve Prefontaine- ‘To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.’”
Hopkins was dominant in her run, clipping the tape in 19:20.05, almost a full minute in front of the rest of the field. Hopkins became the first Lincolnton runner, male or female, to win an individual Cross Country State Championship.
“Katherine never gives less than her best and she fully uses the gifts and talents she’s been given every day that she wakes up to run,” McKee said. “She’s the type of athlete coaches can only dream of having ever once in a while. I’m proud to be her coach and in her corner.”
