Post 100 Will Blackburn holds runner

Post 100 first baseman Will Blackburn tries to hold Matthews baserunner Griffin Brooks close during an Area IV second-round playoff game at Fraley Field in Cherryville.

Cherryville Post 100 finished off a three-game sweep of Matthews Post 235 with a 9-6 win in Game 3 Monday night at Butler High School.

Post 100 overcame a four-run deficit in the deciding game, scoring seven times over the final four innings to clinch the series and set up an Area IV Semifinal series with the Gaston Braves.

Joseph Webb went 2 for 3 at the plate with a home run, 3 RBIs and two runs scored to lead Cherryville. Jacob Hamrick added a pair of hits, including a double and scored three times for Post 100 and Ashton Pope homered for the second straight game.

Griffin Brooks, Luke Alexander, Evan Hempe and Jones all had two hits to lead Matthews.

The series win for Cherryville sends them into the Area IV semifinal round. Post 100 will take on the Gaston Braves in a best-of-7 series that is tentatively scheduled to get underway on Thursday at Fraley Field in Cherryville at 7 p.m.

Gaston (18-4) defeated Cleveland County three games to one in the second round of the Area IV playoffs to advance.

Game 2: Cherryville 3, Matthews 1

Zane Brockman pitched five shutout innings and Ashton Pope drove in all three Post 100 runs in Cherryville’s Game 2 victory over Matthews at Fraley Field on Sunday.

Brockman had a dominant performance on the mound, giving up just two Matthews hits while striking out 8 and walking just one.

Pope provided a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning after Brockman had reached base with a one-out single. Then in the home half of the third, Pope’s RBI single scored Collin Robinson who began the inning with a base hit.

Post 100 outhit Matthews 8 to 3 in Game 2.


Game 1: Cherryville 7, Matthews 0

Post 100 scored all seven runs over the final three innings following a weather delay at Fraley Field in Cherryville on Friday. Joseph Webb picked up the win on the hill with five shutout innings. Kanon Willis allowed just one baserunner over the final two innings.
