Post 100 Zane Brockman

Post 100’s Zane Brockman takes a pitch during the game.  Brockman reached on a base hit and a walk in Cherryville’s 4-3 win over Post 29.

Cherryville Post 100 scored four times over the first two innings and held off Caldwell County late for a 4-3 Area IV Western Division win on Wednesday night at Fraley Field.

A pair of infield errors, a hit batter and two walks contributed to Post 100 taking an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Cherryville made it 4-0 in the second when Landon Jenkins drew a leadoff walk and later scored on Will Fowler’s RBI base hit.

From that point on, however, the Post 100 bats were silenced.

Caldwell County Post 29 would trim the Cherryville lead to 4-1 in the top of the fourth on a run scoring single from Arin Gaines. Then in the fifth, Caldwell closed the gap to one with hits by C.J. Cook and Isaiah Kirby.

Post 29 threatened in the sixth inning before Cherryville got a strikeout-caught stealing double play to end the inning.

Joseph Webb, who had come on in relief of starting pitcher Will Blackburn in the fifth, did allow a pair of Caldwell County baserunners to open the top of the seventh before getting a pair of strikeouts and a groundout, closing the door and recording the save.

Blackburn was credited with the win on the mound, while Fowler’s 2 for 3 night led the Cherryville offense. Post 100 stranded 12 baserunners in the contest.

With the win, Cherryville improved to 12-7 on the season, including 8-1 in Area IV Western Division play.

Caldwell County 4, Cherryville 2

In the completion of a game started back on May 28 in Granite Falls, Post 29 held off a Cherryville seventh-inning rally to get the win.

The game at Caldwell County had ended under protest due to a Post 29 violation of the pitch count. The starting pitcher for Caldwell County that night had gone over the 105-pitch limit. The game picked back up on Wednesday at the point where the 105th pitch was thrown.

The loss for Post 100 was their first Division loss of the season.
