GREENSBORO—The North Lincoln track team claimed the 2A Men’s Team State Championship thanks to four event winners on Friday at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro.
The team combined to outscore second-place Croatan 76.5 to 57 in the meet.
North Lincoln runners won both of the individual long-distance races in the meet, claiming the 1600 and 3200-Meter Runs. Jason Thomson earned first in the 1600-Meter Run, crossing in a time of 4:22.07 to claim the top spot. Thomson also had a fifth-place finish in the 800-Meter Run.
Teammate Brian Risse was the first to finish in the 3200 Meters, climbing to the top of the podium in 9:30.59.
North Lincoln’s Jake Soorus won both of the throwing events in field competition. Soorus tossed the Shot Put 56’ 6.5” to win first place and threw 175’ 11” to earn first in the Discus.
The Knights’ Johnny Grant placed third in the 1600-Meter Run and fourth in the 800-Meter Run, while Jalen Ward was fourth in the 400-Meter Dash. The 4x400 relay team of Jason Risse, Grant, Thomson and Ward took fifth place in the event.
Lincolnton’s Daniel Hopkins had a third-place finish in the 3200-Meter Run, and Kobe Thomas of East Lincoln was fourth in the Triple Jump. Alex Reavis of Bandys took first place in the High Jump.
The North Lincoln girls, who placed fourth in the state as a team, were led by Angie Allen first-place finish in the 1600-Meter Run and second in the 3200-Meter Run. Alyssa Galvin took fifth in the 3200-Meter Run and Olivia Correa was fifth in the Long Jump.
Lincolnton’s Emily Shain was the 2A individual state champion in the shot put with a throw of 43-11.50, and a fourth place finish in the Discus with a toss of 119-02.
The East Lincoln girls placed sixth in the state as a team. The Lady Mustangs were led by
Michaela Gammon second-place finish in the 3200-Meter Run, third in the 1600-Meter Run and fourth in the 400-Meter Run. Taryn Giles-Robinette took third place in the Discus, and the 4x800 relay team of Marlene Delgado, Olivia Humphrey, Hope Hembree and Michaela Gammon took fourth place in the event.
Landon Beard of North Lincoln was awarded the 2A men’s Sportsmanship Award along with Brendon hodge of Croatan.
