East Lincoln rebounded from their six-point overtime loss a week ago at West Lincoln to defeat the Newton-Conover Red Devils by a score of 30-7 Friday night in Denver.
The Mustangs, who led 16-7 at the half, blanked Newton-Conover in the second half of the game and rolled to their fifth overall victory of the Spring 2021 season against just two losses.
The win for East Lincoln was bittersweet, however.
The Mustangs will miss the 2AA state playoffs even though they finished in a second-place tie in the South Fork 2A Conference.. Both East Lincoln and West Lincoln completed the season with 4-2 conference records, but West Lincoln owns the tie-breaker after defeating the Mustangs 27-21 in overtime on April 2 in Vale.
With the playoff field being cut in half this season due to Covid-19, the 2A West only received one wild-card bid to the playoffs. That bid is based solely on conference winning percentage, and went to Pisgah.
The Black Bears were 4-1 in the Mountain 6 Conference, winning 80 percent of those contests.
The Mustangs were 4-2 in the South Fork 2A Conference, a winning percentage of .667.
Pisgah enters the playoffs as the eighth seed in the 2AA West and will take on North Davidson, the number one seed in that bracket. (Published April 12, 2021)
