MAIDEN—Heading into Tuesday’s matchup with second-place Maiden, the East Lincoln Lady Mustangs were looking to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the South Fork 2A Conference.
After all, East Lincoln had outscored their opponents 63-2 through their first eight contests, and senior hurler Payton Baker had been nearly perfect on the mound.
Tuesday’s first meeting of the season between the SF2A’s top two squads seemed to be just another day at the office for the Lady Mustangs, who pounded out 12 hits in a 7-2 conference road win to take control of the league at least for the time being.
Baker was dominant on the hill again for East Lincoln, allowing just one earned run on three hits, while striking out six.
Offensively, leadoff hitter Taliyah Thomas set the pace with three stolen bases and three runs scored.
Katelynn Crowe delivered with a pair of hits, including a triple and two runs batted in and Betsy Eatmon also drove in a pair of runs with two singles.
Bailey Hardin and Tori Venters also had two hits for the Lady Mustangs.
East Lincoln (9-0) took the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning, then put the pressure on Maiden (5-2) with a 3-run third. The Lady Mustangs added two more in the fourth inning to all but put the game away, considering Baker’s dominance on the mound.
For the Lady Blue Devils, Aleah Ikard had a pair of base hits and Macy Michael drove in a run with an RBI triple.
The two teams were to meet up again in Denver on Thursday, but the game finished too late for publication. Another East Lincoln win would give East Lincoln a nearly insurmountable four-game advantage.
