East Lincoln (16-1) broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, then held off the Black Knights of North Davidson for a 6-4 win in Friday’s third-round 2A state playoff contest in Denver.

The win sends the Lady Mustangs (16-1) to the 2A West Regional Finals on Tuesday at East Lincoln High School at 6 p.m.

Katelynn Crowe had a big day offensively for the Lady Mustangs, with a single, a double and a home run, just a triple away from hitting for the cycle.

Taliyah Thomas had two hits, including a 2-run homer. Thomas scored twice and drove in a pair of runs to help East Lincoln advance. Betsy Eatmon also had a pair of hits for the Lady Mustangs.

Payton Baker pushed her record on the mound to 15-0, allowing four runs on 7 hits, striking out six and walking none.

Abby Craver had a 2-run home run and Maddy Altiers and Abby Barker each had two hits to lead North Davidson.

After Oak Grove had tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning, Katelynn Crowe drove in Taliyah Thomas with a walk-off double in the bottom half to send the Lady Mustangs into Friday’s third-round matchup against North Davidson.

East Lincoln 4, Lincolnton 3

Graham Smiley delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning that scored Isaac Armstrong with the game-winner and the Mustangs (4-0) defeated the Wolves 4-3 Friday night in Denver. Logan Palmer picked up the win on the mound, pitching two scoreless innings, yielding just one hit and striking out three. Smiley had two hits, including the game-winning RBI, Gavin Houser doubled and scored and Garrett Michel belted a solo home run. Lincolnton (2-2) got two hits each from Sam Carpenter, Will Blackburn and Easton Dellinger. The Wolves outhit the Mustangs 7-4.


North Lincoln 5, Lake Norman Charter 1

The Knights (4-0) exploded for 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to get the season sweep over Lake Norman Charter (0-4). Landon Reeves pitched 6-2/3 innings to get the win, allowing one run on 4 hits, striking out 6 and walking two. The junior also had two hits to help the Knights to the win.


Maiden 1, West Lincoln 0

The Blue Devils scored the only run of the game on a sacrifice fly from Austin Hoyle in the bottom of the first inning. Noah Huss pitched well for the Rebels (0-4) in the loss, giving up just the one run on six hits in five innings. Huss struck out 6 and walked just two. Brennan James pitched 5 shutout innings for Maiden (4-0) to pick up the win.


Lincoln Charter 10, Christ the King 0

Mason Smith pitched five shutout innings, surrendering just one hit while striking out 12 in the Eagles (4-0) win on Friday. Smith also drove in 6 of Lincoln Charter’s 10 runs. Davis Al-Hussaini drove in a pair of runs with 2 hits.
