EL Senior Softball Players

The East Lincoln Lady Mustangs softball team was off to a 4-0 start to the 2020 season when Covid-19 brought everything to a halt.  Pictured left to right are seniors Hannah Davis, Meredith Summey, Haley Erwin, Kylie Thress and Abigail Helms.

Following back-to-back 15-win seasons, the Lady Mustangs were poised to exceed that number of victories in 2020 and possibly make a deep run in the 2A state playoffs.

East Lincoln won their first four games of the season in dominating fashion, outscoring their opponents 51-7 with a pair of shutouts.

But, the Lady Mustangs, like many other teams across the state of North Carolina, will just be left with the thoughts of what might have been.

The 2018 East Lincoln softball team finished with a record of 15-6, then defeated West Stokes 8-6 in eight innings in the opening round of the 2A state playoffs before losing to Fred T. Foard 3-2 in round two.

Then the 2019 Lady Mustangs went 15-6, and dropped a heartbreaking 2-1, 13-inning game in the first round of the playoffs to Bunker Hill.

So as you can see, with the experience and senior leadership of this 2020 team, there were high expectations.

Those seniors include Hannah Davis, a four-year varsity outfielder who is a captain this season.  Davis has committed to play at the next level at Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina.

Meredith Summey, a four-year varsity outfielder and first baseman, is also a 2020 captain.  Summey, who was named the Lady Mustangs Outstanding Outfielder in 2017, will play next season at Lees McRae College in Banner Elk.

Haley Erwin, who has committed to Lander University in Greenwood, S.C., was a four-year varsity outfielder for head coach Mike Freeman.  Erwin, who is a captain this season, was the Mustang Award winner in 2019.  Following last season, Erwin was named to the North Carolina Softball Coaches Association’s All-District team.

Abigail Helms, a four-year varsity pitcher and first baseman, has committed to play at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory.  Helms, also elected as a team captain this year, was the MVP of the JV team as a pitcher in 2018, while also playing varsity.

And Kylie Thress, who is a four-year varsity shortstop and 2020 captain.  Thress was the team’s co-MVP last season and an All-Conference performer in 2018 and 2019.  She was the Lady Mustangs’ Outstanding Freshman in 2017, and Outstanding Infielder in 2018.  Thress, who was also named to the NCSCA’s All-District team in 2019, has committed to play at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

East Lincoln High School will definitely miss this talented group of seniors.
