Lincoln Charter couldn’t overcome a 4-1 deficit on the road Saturday night, falling 4-3 at Mountain Island Charter in their third-round 1A state playoff matchup and ending the season for the Eagles.
The Raptors jumped out early, scoring on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead after one inning.
Max McCreary scored on an infield error in the top of the second to pull Lincoln Charter to within a run, but Mountain Island pushed the lead to 4-1 in the home half of the fourth inning on an RBI single from Cohen Howard and another wild pitch.
Davis Al-Hussaini’s RBI fielder’s choice scored Dylan Verdi to make it a 4-2 game in the fourth, and the Eagles closed the gap to one when McCreary scored on Mason Smith’s sacrifice fly in the sixth.
But that would be as close as Lincoln Charter could get.
After a leadoff walk to Jacob Smith in the top of the seventh, the Raptors got a strikeout and recorded the final two outs of the game at home plate and at third base.
Blake Nelson had two hits in three trips to the plate to lead the Eagles offensively. Mountain Island Charter (13-2) won the third-round matchup with only one base hit in the game.
The Raptors advance to the 1A West Regional Final, and will play at East Surry on Tuesday. Lincoln Charter ends their season with a record of 15-2.
