Cherryville Post 100 entered Sunday night’s Game 3 of the best-of-5 second-round series against Lincoln County Post 455 looking for a sweep.

Post 100 had taken a two games to none lead in the series with a 6-2 victory at Fraley Field in Cherryville in Game 1 on Friday evening, coupled with Saturday night’s 3-0 shutout win over the Cardinals at East Lincoln High School in Game 2.

Post 100’s Noah Huss pitched 4-1/3 strong innings of relief in the series opener on Friday at Cherryville. The right-hander was called on after the Cardinals had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with runners at first and third and no outs, and kept Lincoln County from scoring any additional runs.

Huss allowed just one run in his outing, striking out four Cardinal hitters and walking none.

Zach Wilson followed Huss on the mound in the fifth inning, and threw 2-2/3 scoreless innings, striking out six.

Will Heavner and Reid Stroupe had two hits each to lead the Cherryville offense. Six different Post 100 hitters had RBIs in the series opener.

Lincoln County was led by Sam Carpenter, who had a pair of hits and drove in a run. Gavin Jiminez took the loss for the Cards, although he allowed only one earned run.

On Saturday, Cherryville broke a 0-0 tie with a run in the sixth and added 2 insurance runs in the seventh to give Post 100 the 3-0 win in Game 2 of the best-of-five series.

Zane Brockman (Kings Mountain High School) pitched a complete-game shutout for Cherryville.

Cleveland County vs. Queen City

In other Area IV playoff action, Cleveland County Post 82-155 was facing elimination entering Sunday night’s Game 3 against Queen City in Shelby.

Cleveland County dropped Game 1 by a score of 5-1 on Friday at home, then went down 2-0 in the series with a loss on Saturday at Queen City by a score of 10-6.


Gaston Braves vs. Rutherford County

The two teams entered Sunday’s contest tied at one game apiece. Rutherford County won the opener on Friday night at South Point High School by a score of 9-5. The Gaston Braves bounced back to win Game 2 at McNair Field in Forest City 5-1.


Mint Hill vs. Burke County

Following Friday’s rainout, Mint Hill out-slugged Burke County 12-11 in Game 1 of a Saturday doubleheader. Burke County bounced back to win the nightcap with a 4-0 shutout to even the series 1-1 going into Sunday night.

The Mint Hill-Burke County series winner is set to face the Lincoln County-Cherryville winner in the Area IV semifinals. Game 1 of that series is set for Wednesday.  (Published July 12, 2021)
