Brent Walls

Cherryville Post 100’s Brent Walls waits on a pitch during a recent game at Fraley Field.  Walls and Cherryville will host Union County on Saturday in Game 1 of the Area IV semifinals.

The matchups are set for the Area IV playoffs semifinal round which will get underway Saturday night at the home of the higher seeded teams.

Top-seeded Cherryville Post 100 (23-9) will open a best-of-five series with Union County Post 535 (17-6) at Fraley Field at 7 p.m. on Saturday.  Cherryville is a perfect 6-0 in the Area IV playoffs so far, but will face their toughest test to date against Union County.

Post 535 is coming off a 3 games to 1 series win over Pineville Post 337, where they outscored their opponent 37-10.  Union County won the final two games of the series 15-0 and 9-0.  Union swept Hickory Post 48 in the opening round three games to none, allowing just one run in the series.

But Post 100 has also been dominant.  Cherryville rolled past Cleveland County Post 82/155 in the first round three games to none, outscoring them 35-4.  They took care of Gastonia Post 23, also in a 3-game sweep, by scores of 2-1, 6-1 and 6-2.

The other semifinal matchup features Mint Hill Post 5039 (20-6) against the Gaston Braves (17-8).  Gaston defeated Asheville Post 70 three games to one, while Mint Hill got past Lincoln County Post 455, also 3-1.

The two semifinal winners will advance to the North Carolina American Legion State Tournament in Cherryville on July 26-30.

If Cherryville Post 100 should advance to the Area IV finals, the two semi-final losers would meet in a one-game playoff for the third and final spot.  Cherryville receives an automatic bid to the state tournament as the host.

Area 2 was scheduled to host this year’s state tournament but declined.  That gives host Area IV an extra spot in the tournament, and limits Area II to just one berth.

Area III Playoffs

Heading into Thursday night, Davidson County (16-7) held a 2 games to 0 lead over perennial power Rowan County (22-11) in their best-of-five quarterfinal series.  That means if Rowan is to make it to Cherryville for the state tournament, they’ll have to defeat Davidson County three-straight games and then win a semifinal series.

Mocksville (14-16) leads one top seed, Concord (12-13), two games to none in their best-of-five series, High Point (18-11) leads Eastern Randolph (5-21) 2-0, and Randolph County (25-6) holds a 2-0 lead over Stanly County (19-9).

Area II Playoffs

It’s no surprise that Wilmington Post 10 got one of the first-round byes in the Area II playoffs, with the other going to Pleasure Island Post 129.

In the quarterfinal round, Whiteville Post 137 swept Port City Post 545 two games to none in a best-of-3 series, and Hope Mills Post 32 was tied at one game apiece with Wallace Post 156 heading into Thursday night’s third and deciding game.

If Hope Mills won Thursday’s game, they will take on Wilmington in the semifinal round, but if Wallace took the series, they would play Pleasure Island in the semis.  Whiteville will face the other.

Area I Playoffs

There was not as much available information on the playoffs in Area 1, but Kinston Post 43 (17-2) did defeat Wilson Post 13 three games to none, although the final two were by forfeit due to lack of players.

Wayne County Post 11 (23-7) is battling it out with Pitt County Post 39 (19-7) in one of the semifinal matchups.  Heading into Thursday’s Game 3 of the best-of-five series, the two teams were tied at one game each.
