Kenneth Richard Matson

On Saturday, August 31, 2019, Kenneth Richard Matson, loving husband, father, and grandfather, was tragically taken from his family at the age of 63. 

 "Ken" or "Kenny" was born in Mason City, Iowa on August 30, 1956. He married Kathy Laney Matson on June 6, 1978, and together they raised three sons. Ken served in the United States Air Force from September 12, 1975 to March 31, 1996 when he retired as a Senior Master Sergeant.   During his time in the military, Ken received many honors and achievements including NCO of the Quarter and Airman of the Year.  He was chosen for a special NATO operation in the Arctic Circle and to work in headquarters at Scott Air Force Base.  Since retiring, Ken was employed at Timken for more than 10 years.  He also spent 4 years as a civilian contractor in the war zones of Afghanistan.  Most recently, he was employed at Target Distribution Center.  

 He is survived by his wife of forty-one years, Kathy; 3 sons - Jason Matson of Lincolnton, Jon Matson and wife Amy of Oxford, NC, James Matson and wife Holly of Lincolnton, 6 grandchildren- Nate, Caleb, Leah, Dillon, Katie, and Corbin;  his parents - Richard and Bonna Matson of Mason City, IA;  his brothers - Dale and Jean Westendorf, Allen and Donna Matson, and Michael and Eileen Matson;  mother-in-law, Catherine Laney; sister-in-law - Jan Dellinger and husband Sam; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews, and great-nephews and great-nieces.  

 Ken enjoyed being active and completed multiple marathons.  He was an avid cyclist and frequently participated along-side his father in the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI).  He was an active member of Liberty Baptist Church where he sang in the choir.  He enjoyed traveling with his wife and taking long road trips with his family.  Kenny was happiest picking on and playing with his grandkids who affectionately called him "Pappy" or "Papeye".  

Ken was known for his love for God, his love for his family, and his love of life.  His generosity, willingness to help others, sense of humor, and strong work ethic made him the man so loved by his family and friends.  

 A memorial service with military honors will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at Liberty Baptist Church, 2054 West Maiden Rd at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Larry Blakley and Rev. Dr. Cameron Cloud officiating.

 William Hunter Rhyne “Bub”

William Hunter Rhyne “Bub”, age 83 of Lincolnton, NC passed away August 30, 2019 at CaroMont Health in Gaston County, NC.  He was born on October 11, 1935 in Lincoln County, NC to the late Hunter Clyde and Georgia Waycaster Rhyne. He served in the United States Army and worked in the machine shop as an inspector at Getrag many years.

Mr. Rhyne is survived by his wife, Sharon Hutchins Rhyne of the home, one son Daniel Hunter Rhyne of Colorado Springs, and two daughters Sonja Kaye Duncan of Hickory and Melany Anne Casey of Maiden, one brother, Lee Rhyne, and four sisters; Ann Poteat, Minnie Dellinger, Catherine Sherrill, and Dorothy Hull, and eight grandchildren; Katelyn Casey, Jacob Casey, Sarah Casey, Heather Casey, Noah Rhyne, Elizabeth Rhyne, Johanna Rhyne, and Naomi Rhyne, and one great grandchild, "Aggy" Hudgens

 Christina Stephanie Hedspeth

Christina Stephanie Hedspeth, age 30, of 125 Buff Street in Lincolnton, died on Monday, September 2, 2019.

 Her funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday September 7, 2019, at Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Yount officiating.  Burial will follow in Hillcrest Gardens in Mt. Holly.  The family will receive friends on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. at the church.

 Christina was born June 4, 1989, in Gaston County, James Randy Chaney and Sandra Causby Chaney. 

 She is survived by her parents, Randy and Sandra Chaney of Lincolnton; a daughter, Autumn Hedspeth of Lincolnton; sisters, April Lehman, and husband Walt, of Burlington, and Katrina Cloninger, and husband John, of Concord; grandmother, Shirley McGinnis of Lincolnton; nephews, Nate and Owyn Lehman; aunts, Rosemarie Curran, and husband Danny, and Jill Yochim of Nashville, TN; uncles, Steve Chaney of Bessemer City, Jerry Chaney, and wife Cindy, of Hudson, Dean Chaney, and wife Libby, of Stanley, and Bob Chaney of Jackson, MS; and numerous cousins.

  Nellie Sue Leatherman Harrill

Nellie Sue Leatherman Harrill, age 84, of Woodmont Circle in Lincolnton, died on Tuesday, September 3, 2019.

 Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2019, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church with Rev. Chad Walker officiating.  Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Thursday from 12:45 until 1:45 p.m. at the church.

 Mrs. Harrill was born November 19, 1934, in Lincoln County, to the late Hal and Vera Dellinger Leatherman.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Jack Alexander Harrill.

 She is survived by two sons, Michael Harrill, and wife Amanda, of Cherryville, and Jeff “Bo” Harrill, and wife Rhonda, of Lincolnton; four grandchildren, Alicia High, and husband Lance, Jaclyn Harrill, Alex Harrill, and Patricia Harrill; and four great-grandchildren, Ryan Hodgins, Jake High, Beau High, and Jayci Randall.

  Patricia “Pati” Townsend Cooper

Patricia “Pati” Townsend Cooper, age 58, of Crouse School Road in Crouse, died on Sunday, September 1, 2019. 

 Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2019, in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Wyant officiating.  Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4, 2019, at Warlick Funeral Home. 

 Pati was born March 24, 1961, in Florence, South Carolina, to the late John and Camilla Townsend.  In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her children, Kelley Huitt and Kippen Huitt; and siblings, Johnny Townsend, Sandy Townsend, and Kimberly Townsend.  She graduated from Presbyterian School of Nursing. 

 She is survived by her husband, Michael Cooper of the home; her children, Beri Huitt (Matthew Woodruff) of Lincolnton, Braden Huitt (Hannah) of Lincolnton, Jay Huitt of Crouse, and Megan Cooper (TC Rollins) of Statesville; a sister, Cari T. Rhodes (Jeff) of Fletcher, NC; grandchildren, Joel, Jack, and Mason; and nieces and nephews, Evan, Kelly, Ashley, and Milla.
