Joe Franklin Whitener, 83 of Maiden passed away March 22, 2019.

 The funeral service will be held March 24, 2019 at 3 p.m. at Mays Chapel UMC in Maiden. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 – 2:45 p.m. at the church.

Rev. Donald Willis, 75, of Belwood, passed away March 22, 2019.

The funeral service will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.

Grady Clarence Ramsey, 96, passed away March 22, 2019.

Funeral services will be held March 26, 2019 at 2 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service in the church.

Charles Augustus Helms, 81 passed away Friday, March 22, 2019.

A memorial service will be held March 27, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at Christ the King Church in Shelby. Burial will be private.  The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Miles Douglas “Doug” Childers

Mr. Miles Douglas “Doug” Childers, age 66, of Flay Rd. passed away March 21, 2019 at Atrium Health-Cleveland.  He was born February 1, 1953 in Cleveland County to the late Norris S. and Bobbie Helms Childers.  Doug was a member of Bess Chapel United Methodist Church.  He graduated from West Lincoln High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University.  He retired from West Lincoln Middle School with over 30 years of service as a beloved coach and PE teacher.  Coach Childers was an outstanding basketball player and enjoyed coaching both basketball and football.  He was an avid Carolina Tarheels fan.  Doug also enjoyed fishing and dancing. 

Survivors include his brothers, Kelly Childers and wife, Jill, Todd Childers and wife, Jennifer, and Kip Childers and wife, Stacy; nieces, Brooke Ramsey and Katy Geymont; great nephew and nieces, Jackson and Gemma Geymont and Harper Lane Ramsey; best friend, Jim Harkey; and caregiver and friend, Lynn Smith.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 24, 2019 at 3:00 PM at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Alice Day and Rev. Butch Ross officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 to 2:45 PM prior to the service at the church.

 Donnie "Don" Hugh Heavner

Donnie "Don" Hugh Heavner, age 81, of Lincolnton passed away Wednesday, March 20th, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Howard Kelly Heavner and Emma Lee (Murphy) Heavner, sister Hilda Ray, brother Kenneth Heavner and nephew Michael Heavner. 

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Dorothy "Dot" (Taylor) Heavner of the home; daughter Donna Fletcher and husband Barry of Cowpens, SC; son Daniel and fiance Brandy Doyle of Hickory, son Donnie Knight and wife Barbara of Granite Falls; granddaughter Alea Bundy and husband Rick of Kings Mountain; grandsons Patrick Edge of Saint Paul's, Cody Heavner of Lincolnton, and Aydan Heavner of Wilmington; sister Jackie Blackburn of Cherryville; brother Tommy Heavner of Lincolnton; brother-in-law Ted Taylor of Lewisville, TX, brother-in-law Jesse Joel Taylor of Lincolnton; sister-in-law Cathy Taylor of Lincolnton; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. 

Donnie was the supervisor for NC Spinning in Lincolnton for 42 years. 

The funeral will be 2:00 pm Monday, March 25th, 2019 at Jenkins Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ricky Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 pm Monday at the Celebration Center of Jenkins Funeral Home.

 Ann Powel Debele Herbertson

Ann Powel Debele Herbertson, age 77, of Lincolnton, went home to be with her Lord Jesus on Thursday, March 21, 2019.

 A celebration of Mrs. Herbertson’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at Covenant Church with the Rev. Mike Devine and the Rev. Nathan Grooms officiating, following the family’s receiving of friends at the church from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m..  Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

 She was born in Savannah, GA, on July 29, 1941, to the Rev. Frederick C. and Helen Inglesby Debele, Jr., who preceded her in death.  She is survived by her husband, the Rev. David H. Herbertson, her children, David Kirk Herbertson and Carol Herbertson Eason and son-in-law Timothy Mark Eason, all of Lincolnton, and sister-in-law Kay Gillrup (Ted) of Jacksonville, FL.  She was a beloved, wife, and adored mother and a faithful friend.

 A graduate of Agnes Scott College, Mrs. Herbertson was a multi-talented woman whose interests and involvement spanned a wide range of activities.  She began her career as a Director of Christian Education, choir director and church secretary and throughout her life was known as a skilled teacher of the Bible.  She spent much of her life in teaching and other school-related activities, particularly in Christian school settings in Columbia and Charleston, SC, in Lincolnton and Franklin, NC, and in Houma, LA.  She served as the secretary to the Dean of Students and Supervisor of the Student Work Program at the Rabun Gap – Nacoochee School in Rabun County, GA.  She headed the Volunteer Service League in Lincoln County in the 1970s where she recruited, trained and placed volunteer assistants in almost all of the county’s schools.  She did the same in Macon County, NC, during the 1980’s.

 In addition, Mrs. Herbertson served as secretary of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Lincolnton and later as Office Manager/Administrative Assistant at Realty World in Franklin, NC.  From 1976 to 1978 she was a member of the Cub Scout District Leadership Team, a den leader and a pack master in Lincolnton.  She served on the Advisory Board of the Evangel Christian School and the Steering Committee of Teen Aid in Macon County.  She was the Director’s Assistant at the South Louisiana Center for the Arts, a psychiatric unit volunteer at Chabert Medical Center, and volunteer aide for special education in several elementary schools, all in Houma, LA.  For almost 50 years Mrs. Herbertson worked beside her husband in serving her God in numerous church settings serving as everything from secretary to pianist, worship/choir director to library coordinator, Bible school director to sound technician to counselor extraordinaire.
