Helen Ruth Shook Waugh, 94, of Newton passed away June 7, 2019.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on today at the Burke Mortuary Chapel in Newton. Burial will follow at Hopewell United Methodist Church Cemetery in Sherrills Ford. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Monday from 2- 2:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mattie Sue Hall Sanders, 71, of Lincolnton, passed away June 8, 2019.

William James ( Billy) Waldrop

William James ( Billy) Waldrop, Jr., 52, passed away June 7th 2019 at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory, NC.  Billy was born May 13, 1967 to Betty Towery and the late William James Waldrop, Sr. in Lincoln County.  Billy fought a long and lengthy battle with his health from day one of his life. He worked in the automotive department at WalMart for many years.  Billy was a huge UNC Tarheel and Jeff Gordon fan. 

 Billy is survived by his mother, Betty Towery, his sister, Joyce Pruitt, his brother, Steve Waldrop and wife Faynette, four nieces, two nephews and five great nieces and nephews.

 The Waldrop family will receive friends June 10, 2019 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. at Goodin-Drum Funeral Home in Maiden.  The celebration of life service for Billy will be  held June 11, 2019 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Goodin-Drum Funeral Home.  Pastor Scott Whitman will officiate.  Interment will follow the service at Maiden City Cemetery.  

 Lenwood Earl Prevatte

Lenwood Earl Prevatte, age 79, of Victory Grove Church Road, Lincolnton died Friday, June 7, 2019.

A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2019.                        at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton with Rev. Stan Adams                  officiating. At other times the family will be at the home to receive friends.

Mr. Prevatte was born on August 18, 1939 to the late Murphy and Wilma Otuel Prevatte.  He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Frank Prevatte, John Prevatte, Murphy Prevatte, Jr. and Howard Prevatte and two sisters, Margaret Phillips and Lois Lee.  He was a retired supervisor in the textile industry.

Mr. Prevatte is survived by his wife, Helen S. Prevatte of the home; one daughter, Amanda Monroe of Tar Heel; two brothers, Bobby Prevatte of Lumberton and Jimmy Prevatte of Lumberton; two grandchildren, Destinee Monroe and Michelle Monroe.

Mary Catherine Hill

Mary Catherine Hill, Beloved wife of the late John Alexander Hill III born on February 23, 1956 in Newark, New Jersey. Joined her husband in Heaven May 25,2019.

 She is survived by 3 brothers Dominic Zgola of Montegue, New Jersey, Mark Zgola of Keansburg, New Jersey, Derek Zgola of Jacksonville, Florida. One sister Gretchen Foley of Washington, New Jersey.

 Three children Drayton Lee Alvah Drake and Sara Elizabeth Hill of Jacksonville, Florida and Nicole Hill husband Robert Lawson of Cameron, North Carolina.

 Services will be held at Boger city United Methodist church at 11:00 on June 12, 2019. Friends and family received at 9:45-10:45.

 Carlos Bernardi McClain

Carlos Bernardi McClain, 83, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2019 at his home. He was born in Knoxville, TN, son of the late Otis and Sylvia Milani McClain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bettye England McClain and his siblings. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War and a member of First Baptist Church, High Shoals.

 He is survived by his sons, Rev. Douglas McClain and his wife, Paula and Harley McClain and his wife, Dixie; two grandchildren, Christina Bragg and her husband, Craig, and Matthew McClain; great-grandchildren, Zachary Bragg, Benjamin Bragg and Topper McClain; his sisters, Wilma Moose and Delores Raby; his brother, Mickey McClain; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 A service to celebrate the life of Mr. McClain will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at the Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home, Mount Holly. Rev. Douglas McClain, Rev. Jerry Sousley and Rev. Vernon Cope will officiate. Burial will follow, with military honors, at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery, Mount Holly. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 pm on Monday at the funeral home.

Jean Lynn Stroupe

Jean Lynn Stroupe, age 67, of Lincolnton, died Friday, June 7, 2019.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at Laboratory United Methodist Church with Rev. Meg Gaston officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 9:45 a.m. until 10: 45 a.m. Wednesday at Laboratory United Methodist Church.

 Mrs. Stroupe was born on November 22, 1951 and was the daughter of Betty Ellis Lynn.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ricky D. Stroupe and her brother, Eddie Lynn.  She was retired after 35 years as a teacher in the Gaston County School System.

Mrs. Stroupe is survived by her daughter, Allison Stroupe of Lincolnton; her father, Rev. Ed Lynn of Lincolnton and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.

Margie Hallman Gales Heafner

Margie Hallman Gales Heafner, age 94, of Joe Ross Street in Lincolnton, died on Friday, June 7, 2019.

 Ms. Heafner will be laid to rest at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2019, at Forest Lawn Cemetery.  A memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at River View Baptist Church with Rev. Ricky Brown officiating.  The family will greet friends following the service.

 Margie was born February 6, 1925, in Lincoln County, the last of ten children, to the late Ernest W. Hallman and Fannie Armstrong Hallman.  She was preceded in death by her first husband, J.D. Gales; her second husband, Hall Heafner; and a daughter, Becky Faye Gales High.  She worked for Carolina Mills.

 She is survived by two grandchildren, Jeffrey High and Lorrie High; and a son-in-law, Lewis High.

Sherrill Jean Helms

Sherrill Jean Helms (Lingle) Poarch, 81, went to be with her Savior on June 4, 2019.

The daughter of the late Joseph M. and Chattie Snyder Helms; born in Union County.  She lived and worked in Charlotte many years before settling in Stanley and she served her communities as a talented hairdresser.

She was preceaded in death by her precious infant daughter Tonya Jean Lingle; her beloved husband L. Ned Poarch; brothers, Edward and James (Jimmy); sisters, Dorothy (Dot) Wilson, Mary (Josie) Ferrell; Elizabeth (Lib) Rion and niece Crystal Winchester.

She is survived by brother William Helms (Sherri); step daughter Pamela Walker; step grandson Scott Walker (Marsha); step great grandchildren Bailey and Blake; nieces; Teresa Buchanan (Buck), Lisa Maulden (Todd); Lynn Stephens; Marjorie Hinson (Mark); Sarah Meade (Fred); nephews; Eddie Wilson, Mike Wilson, Joseph Helms (Jennifer) and many dearly loved great nieces and nephews; also cherished friend Frank Agee and so many others.

Heritage Funeral Home of Indian Trail will host receiving of friends at 10am and service at 11am on Tuesday, June 11th.  A graveside service will follow at Macedonia Baptist Church of Monroe.

Russell Ray Thornburg

Russell Ray Thornburg, age 91, of Carolina Care in Cherryville, and formerly of Lincolnton, passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2019.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2019, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Tony Matthews officiating.  The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m. in the Philathea Class of the church.

Ray was born January 30, 1928, in Cabarrus County, to the late Robert Hall Thornburg and Irene Hammett Thornburg.  In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Edith Brinkley Thornburg.  He served in the United States Navy, and then worked for BellSouth as a public relations manager.  Ray was a faithful steward at First United Methodist Church, loved golf, enjoyed spending time in the yard, and delivered Meals on Wheels with his wife for twenty years. 

He is survived by a son, Bobby Thornburg, and wife Sharon, of Bessemer City; a daughter, Jill Childers, and husband Kelly, of Cherryville; four grandchildren, Jamie Thornburg, Allyson Cunningham, Holly Jones, and Heather Suttle; and four great-grandchildren. 

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Carolina Care in Cherryville for the love and support they gave our family while caring for Ray.
