Mr. Lester Frank Scronce

Mr. Lester Frank Scronce, 99, of Granite Falls passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson. 

Lester was born on November 21, 1919 in Lincoln County to the late Frank Little Scronce and Vernie Leonard Scronce. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret Smith Scronce, brothers; Hal, Ray, Ben, Jack and, Dan Scronce, and sister; Lib Hoover.

Lester was a maintenance supervisor for the Broyhill home offices for over forty years, and was a proud Veteran of the United States Army, having bravely served his country during WWII in Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe.  He received an American Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and a World War II Victory Medal. 

Those left to cherish his memory include his brothers, Bob Scronce of Crouse, Bill

Scronce of Asheville, and a  sister; Betty Jane Sain of Vale. 

A Graveside Service to honor Mr. Scronce will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Mt. Grove Church Cemetery with Rev. Fred Mitschke officiating and Rev. Ken Smith assisting.  Military Honors will be provided by the United States Army and the Caldwell Veterans Honor Guard. 

Serving as pallbearers will be Shane Richard, Michael Sain, Joe Scronce, Charlie Hoover, Tim Smith and Spencer Smith. 

The family respectfully requests that memorials be made to Bethphage Lutheran Church at 3440 Hwy 182, Lincolnton, NC 28092. 

The family will receive friends for one hour after the service, from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm in the fellowship hall of Mt. Grove Church.

Linda Loraine Brown

Linda Loraine Brown, 68, of Lincolnton, NC passed away from cancer on Thursday, June 6, 2019.

Linda Brown was born Linda Barrett on March 27, 1951 in Dover, NJ.  Linda was a brilliant artist, a trailblazing executive for NEC America and OKIdata America, and a local shop owner.

She is preceded in death by her parents Lee Odis Barrett and Elsie Campbell Barrett and her son, Christopher “Leo” Scott DeVinney.

She leaves behind her husband, Mark Brown of Lincolnton, NC, her son John Weaver III and his wife Kate Weaver of Seneca Falls, NY, her daughter-in-law Elli DeVinney and her grandsons Lucas and Max DeVinney of Tega Cay, SC.

She also leaves five brothers, Ken Barrett of Lenoir, NC, Charles Barrett of Taylorsville, Dean Barrett of Hudson, NC, and Doug Barrett of Lenoir, NC, and Joe Barrett of Morgantown, NC and two sisters, Darlene Frisbee of Gastonia, NC and Teresa Barrett Razza of Morgantown, NC and her dear friend Jack Weaver of Lincolnton, NC.  She was the official “favorite” aunt to ten nieces and nine nephews.

A private gathering of family and close friends will be held later.

Richard Edward “Bird” Clark

Richard Edward “Bird” Clark, age 86, of Lincolnton, died on Monday, June 10, 2019.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2019, in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Rhodes officiating.  The family will receive friends at Warlick Funeral Home on Thursday from 12:00 until 12:45 p.m. 

Mr. Clark was born April 30, 1933, in Lincoln County, to the late Clayton McDonald Clark and Butell Hager Clark.  In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Keever Clark; a daughter, Kathy Brackett; a grandson, Bo Clark; and a great-grandson, C.J. Sides.  He worked as an electrician.

He is survived by three daughters, Linda Sides of Lincolnton, Judy Powell of Lincolnton, and Phyllis Garver, and husband Tim, of Boger City; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Swansboro - Donna

Swansboro - Donna (Carter) Costner, 63, formerly of Gastonia, passed away peacefully on Sunday June 9, 2019 at the SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport. 

Born July 19, 1955 in Gastonia, she was the daughter of Dempsey Webb Carter, Sr. and Peggy (Barrett) Carter.  

Donna was passionate about being a mom, grandmother, sister and daughter.  Her family was always her priority. She will leave a hole in the hearts of all her loved ones.

Donna was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and she retired from Wix after 43 years.

Donna is preceded in death by her father, Dempsey Webb Carter, Sr., beloved husband of 29 years, Bruce Costner and her son, Quentin Abernathy.

She leaves behind her mother, Peggy Carter, her daughter Adrienne Swinney, son Brett Costner (Amanda Moore), brother Dempsey “Butch” Webb Carter (Sherry Carter), sisters Suzanne Corbin (James Corbin) and Lisa Varn (James Varn); her grandson Cameron Swinney, will miss his Grandma. She also leaves behind (7) nieces and nephews and (11) great nieces and nephews. 

A service celebrating Donna’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday June 14, 2019 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 531 Hardin Rd., Dallas. Reverend George Rhyne will officiate. 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday evening June 13, 2019 at the Dallas Funeral Home, 212 W. Trade Street, Dallas. 

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Donna’s name to SECU Crystal Coast Hospice, 100 Big Rock Weigh, Newport, NC 28570.
