Lottie Scronce Grigg

Lottie Scronce Grigg, age 81, of 3495 Wyant Road in Vale, died on Thursday, August 1, 2019.

Her funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 4, 2019, at Crowell Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Prichard officiating.  The body will lie in state for thirty minutes prior to the service.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2019, at Warlick Funeral Home.

Lottie was born August 26, 1937, in Lincoln County, to the late Marshall and Lovie Smith Scronce.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Scronce Phillips.  Lottie worked as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for 32 years before retiring. Recognized as the first female letter carrier in the Charlotte region, she also received the “Million Mile” safe driving award.  

She is survived by two daughters, Lisa Gambini and Glenda Sue Grigg, both of Vale; a son, Edmond “Eddie” Andrew Grigg, Jr., and wife Melody and their son, Marshall, of Vale; a brother, Troy Scronce, and wife Shirley, of Crouse; grandchildren, Jessica Helda, and husband Eric, of Cornelius, and Andy Grigg, and wife Naomi of Lincolnton, and their mother, Lottie’s daughter-in-law, Debbie Grigg. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crowell Memorial United Methodist Church, 4018 Killian Road, Lincolnton, NC  28092.

Geneva Hayes Alexander

Geneva Hayes Alexander 83 of Lincolnton passed away Sunday July 28, 2019 at Carolina Rehab Center in Burke. Born December 2, 1935 in Chester, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Porter Hayes and Lydia Chisholm Hayes. She was proceeded in death by her late husband Valley Alexander and son Warren Alexander. Her six sisters Rosa Lee Reinhardt, Thelma Miles, Helen Miles, Willie Mae Boston, Addie Lou Rogers and Carrie Cunningham and one brother Clinton Hayes. Geneva retired from Home Sponge Hosiery and was a faithful member of Poplar Springs A.M.E Zion Church where she sang in the choir. Geneva loved to cook, make a good pound cake, dance and travel.

 Left to cherish her memory:4 Daughters: Judy (Robert) Barber of Hickory, Robin (Joe) Caldwell of Powder Springs GA, Sylvia (Scotty) Sowell and Annie Alexander both of Lincolnton. Grandchildren: Tasha, Warren, Michael, Rodney, Stephen, Lillie, Ulanda, Phallon, Latasha, Sarah, and Darius. Great Grandchildren: Tyreke,Goddess, Tamya, Taivon, Brayson, Amoni, Aubriana, Grant, Braylon, Issac, Josiah, Isaiah, Serenity, Prisha, Sanquios, Stacyohnna and Payton along with host of nieces and nephews.

 Funeral will be held Saturday August 3, 2019 at Poplar Springs A.M.E. Zion Church, Lincolnton NC. (Quiet hour 2pm and funeral 3pm)  E.F. Drum Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.

 Raymond Max Beckham

Raymond Max Beckham, 89, of Denver passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at his residence.

He was born September 21, 1929 in Gaston County to the late Raymond Lewis Beckham and Tabitha Bowers Beckham. Raymond was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church in Maiden where he served as deacon. He retired after 43 years of service from Duke Energy, where he worked as a welder. Raymond enjoyed bluegrass music and playing the fiddle.

Those left to cherish his memory are; Wife of 69 years: Fay Hill  Beckham of the home, Sons: Stephen Brian Beckham and wife Lisa of Denver, Baron Beckham of Sherrills Ford, Daughters: Toni Sorter and husband Rick of Denver, Karon Armstrong of Denver, Brother: Ted Beckham of Denver, Sister: Pat Collier of Mt. Holly, Four Grandchildren, Six Great-Grandchildren.

 A service to celebrate Raymond’s life will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. at Mountain View Baptist Church in Maiden. Rev. Matthew Seagle Sr. will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends of Saturday, August 3, 2019 from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. at Mountain View Baptist Church.

Donald Edgar VanDerwerken, Jr.

Donald Edgar VanDerwerken, Jr. age 79, of Lincolnton, NC went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, July 26, 2019 at Trinity Ridge in Hickory, NC, with Murlee and family by his side.

Donald was born November 17, 1939 in the home of his parents, the late Donald Edgar and Virginia F. Ottman VanDerwerken, Sr. in Central Bridge, NY. He was a 1957 graduate of Cobleskill High School, Cobleskill, NY. He served in the US Navy for 3 years as an Airplane Engine Mechanic in the Philippines. He was a member of the Order of Elks in Hickory, NC.

Donnie grew up on his father's 164 acre dairy farm in Central Bridge which he later purchased and operated for several years. Later he worked for a short time at General Electric in Schenectady, NY. In 1970, he moved his family to NC and was employed by Duke Power at Marshall Steam Station during the construction of units 3 and 4. Donnie retired from Duke Energy after 25 years. He enjoyed his retirement years in Lincolnton, NC and traveling to the mountains and the beach.

Donald is preceded in death by a grandson, John Ward. Survivors are his loving girlfriend Murlee Moore of Hickory, NC, son Keith (Debbie) VanDerwerken of Denver, NC, daughter Ginny (Lamar) Ward and son Kevin VanDerwerken of Iron Station, NC, daughter Peggy (Rodney) Hoyle of Vale, NC. Grandchildren Christine Bambara, Kyle (Kaitlin) Ward, Seth VanDerwerken, Samantha VanDerwerken, Abigail Hoyle, Eric VanDerwerken, Samuel Hoyle and Hannah Ward. Great-grandchildren Caden, Catherine and R.J. and brother David (Patti) VanDerwerken of Lincolnton, NC.

The family will receive friends on Friday, August 9th at 1:30 pm with a memorial service at 3:00 pm at McKendree UMC, 3537 Maiden Hwy., Lincolnton, NC 28092 with Rev. Greg Plott officiating. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to: McKendree UMC and Trinity Ridge in Hickory, NC.
