A Lincolnton man died after the motorcycle he was driving struck a fallen tree on Highway 73 between Club Drive and Killian Farm Road in Lincoln County. Jacob Chase, 24, was traveling west on Highway 73 at approximately 2 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12.
“Unbeknownst to the motorcyclist, a very large tree had fallen all the way across the roadway,” N.C. Highway Patrol trooper Chris Casey said. “A car had already come up to the tree, turned around and was heading back east. They saw him coming back towards the tree and tried flashing their lights at him but unfortunately he never saw it. He struck the tree, was thrown from his motorcycle and died at the scene from blunt force trauma.”
Excessive speed was not involved, according to Casey. Chase, who just turned 24 on Tuesday, was returning home from where he worked in Huntersville. Highway 73 was closed down in both directions from 2 – 10 a.m. as the NC Department of Transportation cleared the road. Duke Energy responded to repair power lines that were pulled down by the fallen tree.
