Apple drop

Lincolnton will hold its inaugural New Year’s Eve Apple Drop event on Monday. The event doubles as a family oriented way to ring in the New Year and as a benefit Christian Ministries and Community Cats.

The event was inspired by the pickle drop in Mt. Olive. The apple sits atop a small tower on the southeast side of the court square. According to Lincolnton Community Relations Director Laura Morris, revelers can look forward to a street party with favors and noise makers. There are plans for glow-in-the-dark ring toss, bowling and plinko on the courthouse’s southeast lawn. The event will also include food trucks, hot chocolate and cider, and line dancing. The apple will drop at 7 p.m., midnight Greenwich Mean Time.

The event is a joint effort between the city and the Downtown Development Association. There were concerns regarding New Year’s shooting groups gathering in more densely populated areas of town. The solution was to make the Cherryville Traditional New Year Shooters the entertainment and showcase.

“We can create a really cool, family friendly, new tradition for Lincolnton and celebrate our cultural heritage,” Morris said. “They can tell their story, especially for the younger generations to help them understand what it is and why they do it.”

Donations of non-perishable food items for Christian Ministry are requested to replenish their pantries. Cat food and blankets are requested for the Community Cat program that offers free spay, neutering and vaccinations for cats in Lincoln County. Participants that bring a donation will be entered into a raffle for chance to win a small gift donated by downtown merchants.

The Apple Drop is Jan. 31 from 5-8 p.m. Cherryville Traditional New Year Shooters begin at 6:15 p.m. The apple drops at 7 p.m.
