NEWTON – On Saturday, June 27, at approximately 3:00 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and continues to investigate a fatal collision in Lincoln County on NC 150 near Ivey Church Road.  A 2019 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling east on NC 150 and collided head-on with a westbound 2020 Honda CR-V.  The driver of the Honda, Billy Lee Lytton Jr., 67, of Cherryville, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.  A female passenger in the vehicle was transported by medical helicopter to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) in Charlotte with serious injuries.  Lytton was the Chief of Campus Police and Security at Gaston College.  Chief Lytton had previously retired from the Gaston County Police as Assistant Chief after serving for over 30 years.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Gary Franklin Ewing, 52, of Maiden, was injured and also transported to CMC in Charlotte.  Drug impairment is suspected and charges are pending consultation with the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office.
