DENVER – Duke Energy’s Lincoln Combustion Turbine Station was received a Milestone Award from the Lincoln County Economic Development Association for 30 years of operating in Lincoln County. The Lincoln facility consists of 16 natural gas-fired combustion turbines. Natural gas is the primary fuel for the plant, with fuel oil as a secondary fuel source.
Duke Energy broke ground at the Lincoln site in May of 1993. There was a three-year construction period for the project, and it began commercial operations in 1995.
At the Lincoln Combustion Turbine Station, combustion turbine units use compressed air to supplement the power supply when electricity demands are highest. Many of Duke’s combustion turbine units, including the one in Denver, are used to supplement power supply during peak demand periods when electricity use is highest. Like hydroelectric stations, combustion turbine units start quickly. They can be used for a short time to meet temporary energy demands but are also capable of operating for extended periods. Combustion turbine units can operate together or independently.
Lincoln Combustion Turbine Station has a capacity of 1,507 megawatts (winter peak capacity).
Also receiving Milestone Achievement Awards were the following companies:
