A man tried to commit suicide by hanging himself in his cell at the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center on Feb. 4.

A cellmate of the 57-year-old man was awakened by a noise of someone thrashing around and discovered him with a part of a bedsheet tied around his neck and the other end to the bars of the cell, according to a press release from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

The cellmate immediately pushed the call button alerting detention staff to the incident.  Lincoln County EMS was dispatched to the scene and took over lifesaving efforts and transported the inmate to the Atrium Health–Lincoln hospital. He was then transferred to Atrium Health in Charlotte for further treatment.

The inmate had been in jail since Jan. 11 on a charge of a felon in possession of a firearm.
