National Night Out is spreading out into the county this year. Instead of just the block parties that are put on in neighborhoods throughout the City of Lincolnton, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has organized two block parties, one to be held on the western and another on eastern side of the county. This is the first time the Sheriff’s Office has hosted its own event.
Throughout the United States, National Night Out is held on the first Tuesday of August, which this year is Aug. 7, with the intention of bringing the community and police together in an evening of block parties in a stand against crime. The party on the western side will be held at the West Lincoln Optimist Park off Highway 27 West. The party on the eastern side will be adjacent to the Walmart parking lot in Denver on Highway 73.
“This is something I’ve been thinking about doing for the past couple of years,” Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jordan Cody said. “I wanted to get it started in the county. It’s a good community building event, especially in the days and times now when relationships seem to be tense between police and the community in certain areas. I think events like this help bridge the gaps.”
Cody hopes that through this event, neighborhood watches can be established and other community relation events can be planned.
At West Lincoln Optimist Park and the Walmart parking lot, there will be displays showcasing first response organizations within the community like the fire departments, EMS, highway patrol and wildlife. All events are family friendly and children will be able to interact with some of the equipment on display. There will be a DJ providing music, food trucks, ice cream vendors and bouncy houses. The county events will run from 5-9 p.m.
The Lincolnton Police Department will still hold their event in downtown Lincolnton which will run from 5-10 p.m. A list of neighborhoods participating within the city can be obtained from the police department the night of the event. Lincolnton’s National Night Out is known for the diverse food offered by the various block parties ranging from German food, to fried baloney sandwiches, ice cream, burgers and hot dogs.
