The Mustangs Big South 3A opener was Tuesday night and they jumped out to an early lead.

However they were unable to sustain that early advantage and lost 57-44.

The score at halftime was 23-14 with the Green Waves on top.

Acting coach Chip Ashley said it was the Green Wave’s athleticism that gave them trouble.

“They’re very quick and very athletic. They pressed us full-court and in the second quarter they caused a lot of turnovers,” he said.

In the second and third quarters the Mustangs were only able to muster 15 points. This was in large part due to the Green Waves’ defensive pressure according to Ashley.

“They got us out of our rhythm and did a good job offensive rebounding,” he  said.

Ashley believed his team had chances, but just didn’t take advantage of them.

“Take away the second quarter. It really, really hurt us and put us down by nine at halftime. We had opportunities, but just didn’t make shots when we had the chances. We played well in three quarters, but that one quarter really hurt us,” he said.

Darin Dellinger led the Mustangs with 16 points and was 10-10 from the free throw line. Dante Roseboro had a solid game with nine points. T.J. Smith chipped in with seven.

Antwane Pagan led the Green Wave with 16 points.

A bright spot for the Mustangs was their performance at the charity stripe.

“I was real pleased with our free throw shooting. We were 21-25 from the line and that’s something we have struggled with all season,” Ashley said.

The loss makes the Mustangs 3-5 on the season, with a 0-1 record in the Big South 3A.

The coach was, however, pleased with the resilient spirit the Mustangs demonstrated.

“I was also real pleased with our team not giving up, keeping the intensity and playing hard,” Ashley said.

Ashbrook: Ford 2, Tate 9, Pierce 3, Hopkins 3, Lampke 3, McKoy 2, Pagan 16, Adams 4, Harris 5, Floyd 8.

East Lincoln: Darin Dellinger 16, Jamelle Lowery 6, Dante Roseboro 9, T.J. Smith 7, Brandon Hamilton 1, Grant Covington 5.

Women’s Varsity

The East Lincoln Lady Mustangs won in dominating fashion against the Lady Green Wave Tuesday night 59-28.

East Lincoln jumped out to a 34-14 advantage by the end of the first half. Through three quarters the score was 42-18 Lady Mustangs’ lead.

Head coach Henry Barkley feels like his girls are continuing to improve.

“They are great kids. They listen and want to learn. I also think we’re getting better at receiving contact,” he said.

The fourth quarter was all Mustangs. The green and orange clad young women scored 17 points to close out a solid all-around effort.

It was a coming-out party for Toree Roseboro who led the Lady Mustangs with 24 points. Her coach was thrilled with her performance. Sara Fleming was solid inside scoring 22 points, while Kim Scercy contributed with six.

Although Barkley was happy with the win, he feels there are some areas his team needs to improve on.

“We must continue to work on defense and our rebounding must improve,” he said.

The win raises the Lady Mustangs’ record to 6-2 on the season. They are now 1-0 in the conference since this was their Big South 3A opener.

Ashbrook: Smith 6, Peach 6, Fox 1, Covin 4, Ramsy 3, Bertley 7, Landstoller 1.

East Lincoln: Sara Fleming 22, Leslie Marlowe 2, Kim Scercy 6, Brooke Michael 1, Koree Roseboro 2, Susan Rutledge 2, Toree Roseboro 24.
