Rebels blown out by perfect Ironmen

Published December 15, 2003

CHERRYVILLE—

Cherryville was not about to let West Lincoln hang around long this time.

The Ironmen opened with a fullcourt press that took the Rebels out of their offense early, and the result was an 82-55 victory Friday in the final non-conference tune up for both basketball teams.

Unlike the Dec. 5 meeting at West Lincoln, in which the Rebels were competitive for a half, this one was a yawner by the end of the first quarter.

Cherryville used its press and halfcourt traps to get the quick tempo it wanted and jumped out to a 20-8 lead after the first eight minutes. The Ironmen then went on a 12-0 run midway through the second period to turn the game into a rout.

Three-point specialist Casey Rainwater, who had 14 points for the game, started the decisive run with a shot behind the arc at the 3:30 mark for a 32-14 lead. Jason Browne, Cherryville's 6-5, 240-pound power forward, followed with two free throws and an inside basket.

By halftime, the Ironmen were up 44-20, and by the end of the third quarter they had stretched it to 68-33.

Browne, a force inside for which West Lincoln had no answer, had 17 points by halftime and finished with 23 for the game. Guard Kenneth Harris dominated perimeter play on both ends of the court and scored 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting.

Simply put, the Rebels did not have the ball handlers to handle Cherryville's array of defenses. West Lincoln had nine turnovers in the first half alone.

The top scorers for the Rebels were Chase Caldwell and Ty Curtis with 12 each, and Matt Edwards with 10. Freshman guard Taylor Woodie came off the bench to score six points on 3-of-6 shooting.

Since that first meeting, the teams have gone in different directions. The Ironmen are 8-0 heading into Southern Foothills 1A Conference play this week. West Lincoln, 4-0 prior to the first Cherryville game, has dropped four straight to fall to 4-4.

The Rebels will try to halt the free fall this Friday at home against Chase in their Midwest 2A Conference opener.
