Tonight will mark the fourth consecutive game against an unblemished opponent for West Lincoln. Last night the Rebels fell to the Fred T. Foard Tigers 59-41 in an endowment game at
home.
The Tigers jumped out to a quick startup 14-8 at the end of the first quarter. That trend continued in the second, outscoring the Rebels 16-10 for a 30-18 halftime advantage.
Head coach Chad Wright said the areas in which the Tigers really stuck out were their strength and physicality.
“Not only were they an opposing team with their height, but they’ve spent significant time in the weight room,” he said.
Leading the efforts for Foard was 6’5” point guard Adam Teague. Wright was impressed by Teague’s ability.
“He’s an exceptional player with a tremendous shot. He definitely presents a matchup problem. He shoots the ball as well as any high school player you’ll find,” he said.
The Rebels were only outscored four points in the third, 14-10. However, they were unable to muster a single quarter with 15 points scored or more. Wright said the Tigers’ defensive
effort hindered them.
“Foard was very physical on defense which pushed us out of our comfort zone offensively. In turn, we had a lot of one-on-one situations that resulted in very low field goal
percentages,” he said.
Matt Edwards led the Rebels with eight points. Wright is impressed by how much effort he puts into every game.
“Matt had another great game. He absolutely played his heart out. It’s easy just to see his hustle, but he plays smart basketball as well,” he said.
B.J. Holland and Ryan Huffman both turned in strong performances with seven points apiece. Sophomore Gene Arp contributed with six.
The loss drops the Rebels to 4-3 and will play Cherryville tonight. West Lincoln only trailed the Ironmen by three points at the half, last Friday, before losing the contest 74-44.
The win ups Foard’s record to 4-0 on the season.
Wright said he believes that although they’re in the middle of a three-game losing streak, their difficult non-conference schedule will strengthen them as a team.
“This scheduling is going to make us better as we enter the conference season which begins next week. This is the type of competition we’re going to have to face and defeat to achieve
our goal,” he said.
The past three games have not dimmed Wright’s or the team’s outlook on their team goal.
“Our goal of making the playoffs is we need to get to the point where we are beating playoff caliber teams,” Wright said.
