It was the same dominant performance by Sara Flemming, but not the same result for her Lady Mustangs, losing 66-42 to the Lincolnton Lady Wolves.
The Lady Wolves jumped out to a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was much of the same as the Wolves’ swarming defense held the Lady Mustangs to only three points. Head coach David Johnson said his team’s size dictates that style of
defense.
“We’re a smaller team so we’re gonna have to try to play more of an aggressive defense. I think the kids understand how to play it,” he said.
Down 29-12 at the end of the first half the Lady Mustangs could have thrown in the towel, but they kept fighting. Head coach Henry Barkley was proud of his girls.
“Down that many they could have given up, but they never quit against a very good basketball team,” he said.
The Lady Mustangs, led by Flemming and Leslie Arlowe, scored 20 points in the quarter to make the score 50-32 through three periods.
The fourth quarter saw the same intense defense and numerous steals for the Wolves.
Lindsey Sain paced Lincolnton with 16 points on the night. Johnson was happy with her play.
“She did extremely well, I’m very proud of her. She’s getting better playing the guard and post area so that makes her a more well-rounded player,” he said.
Shantae Shank and Santana Edwards also scored in double figures for the Wolves.
“Since we’re a very versatile team I’m going to try to get as many players as we can in double figures, so the other team can’t key on one person,” Johnson said.
Despite the score Johnson was impressed by Flemming’s leadership.
“She’s a very good player. That was one thing we talked about at the beginning of the game was focusing on her and getting her out of her game plan,” he said.
Flemming finished with a game-high 21 points, while teammate Leslie Marlowe nailed several three-pointers to finish with 13 for the game. Toree Roseboro chipped in with seven.
Johnson was also pleased with his centers’ play.
“I thought Ashley (Tipton) and Andrea (Smith) did well rebounding. Andrea Isoler also did well playing the off-guard on the weak side,” he said.
The win moves Lincolnton’s record to 1-2 on the season. The loss lowers the Mustangs’ record to 3-2.
