Wolves’ teams fall at North Gaston

Published December 5, 2003

By JOHN MARK BROOKS, Staff Writer

————————————

It was a tough night for the Lincolnton Wolves with the men and women both losing to the North Gaston Wildcats.

Women’s Varsity

The Lady Wolves lost a heartbreaking game 54-51. Lindsay Sain led Lincolnton in scoring with 12 points. Santana Edwards was also in double figures with 10. Shantae Shank and Jessie Cline contributed with nine and eight respectively.

The Lady Wildcats jumped out on Lincolnton early up 18 to eight at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Wolves outscored their opponent in the final three quarters 43-36. However, that 10 point advantage the Lady Wildcats had at the end of the first proved to be insurmountable for the Lady Wolves.

The loss drops Lincolnton to 1-1 on the young season. They will be in action against East Lincoln tonight.

Lincolnton: Lindsey Sain 12, Santana Edwards 10, Shantae Shank 9, Jessie Cline 8, Ashley Tipton 6, Andrea Smith 2, Shonda Faw 2, Andrea Isoler 2.

Men’s Varsity

The Wolves fell to the Wildcats 61-40 in a lackluster performance. The fact they were without star guard Darren Wilson, who missed the game due to sickness, didn’t help matters.

In a similar way as the women’s game, the Wildcats jumped out to a 18 to nine advantage at the end of the first. Through three quarters the Wolves were down 48-30.

Head coach Bob Cowie felt their ominous beginning played a big factor in the game.

“We came out and turned it over the first four times we had the ball. That got us down 12-0. We were not ready to play right from the get go,” he said.

With Wilson out, Cowie was looking for another player to emerge.

“Without Darren is something we are not used to. It was an opportunity for somebody to step up and nobody took advantage of that,”

Eric Wilson scored 18 in the losing cause. While teammates Zack Gibson and Kyle Snyder scored seven and five respectively.

The Wolves will have a chance to get that bad taste out of their mouths against the East Lincoln Mustangs tonight. Cowie, after Thursday night’s game, was looking forward to it.

“We will have to be more ready to play. If we are not more ready to play tomorrow night, it’s going to be more of the same of what we got tonight,” he said.

“I think we have some that don’t really understand what it is to compete and to get after it all the time. You’ve got to play hard all the time,” Cowie said.

Lincolnton: Eric Wilson 18, Zack Gibson 7, Kyle Snyder 5, Jordy Jefferies 4, Dusty Friday 2, Bradley Hunter 2, Josh Keener 2.

North Gaston: Rollinson 24, Duncan 3, Williams 11, White 6, Tyson 5, Johnson 10, Ewers 2.
