West beats East behind a late spurt

Published December 3, 2003

The West Lincoln Rebels improved their record to 4-0 on the season Tuesday night. The Rebels defeated cross-county rival East Lincoln 52-41.

West Lincoln led 20-14 at the half, but were only able to muster six points in the third quarter of play. The Mustangs took full advantage scoring 13 points to give them a one-point lead entering the final stanza.

The Rebels, who held the lead for much of the game, responded in a big way scoring 26 points in the fourth. Their efforts were spearheaded by Ryan Huffman’s 11-point quarter.

That turned out to be the difference in the ball game. Head coach Chad Wright said the game could have gone either way.

“It was a real sluggish game and it was just a matter of one team going on a run. We were fortunate enough to be that team in the fourth quarter,” he said.

Grant Covington paced East Lincoln with 12 points, while Darin Dellinger chipped in with seven of his own.

Huffman, who had three three-pointers led all scorers with 16. His Rebel teammate B.J. Holland also had a solid night scoring 12. Holland also was clutch in the fourth quarter sinking all eight of his free throw attempts.

Wright was proud of Huffman and Holland among others.

“They really stepped up. They tightened the screws a little bit and made some big shots and free throws,” he said.

The coach also took nothing away from his opponent.

“They really made it difficult for us tonight. Covington had an outstanding game, not only with his 12 points, but really crashed the boards all night long to give them some extra opportunities,” Wright said.

The Rebels host the Cherryville Ironmen Friday night. Wright and his team is excited about the opportunity.

“We have a lot of respect for Cherryville. I personally have a lot of respect for coach Harrell. We are real excited about the opportunity Friday night to compete against them,” he said.

Wright hopes to see plenty of fan support for the contest. “We’re expecting that West Lincoln Gym to be full Friday night,” he said.

East Lincoln: Darin Dellinger 7, LeSharion Johnson 1, Jamelle Lowery 3, Dante Roseboro 5, T.J. Smith 5, Carlos Marquez 4, Brandon Hamilton 1, Grant Covington 12, Josh Davis 4.

Four Mustang players scored in double figures. Sara Flemming with 15, Leslie Marlow 11, Toree Roseboro 11 and Kim Scercy 10.

Flemming had a monster of a game leading the Lady Mustangs with 17 rebounds.

The Lady Mustangs up their record to 2-1. While the Lady Rebels fall to 0-4 on the year.
