LHS JV teams’ fourth-quarter play holds off Mustangs
TERRANCE THOMAS, LTN Staff Writer
December 18, 2002 - Lincolnton junior varsity basketball teams got the best of their eastern Lincoln County rivals Tuesday night.
The JV Lady Wolves got a team-high 16 points from Shonda Faw on route to a 39-33 win over East Lincoln
However, the JV Wolves used a balanced attack to win their game, 52-44.
In the girls game, the lead changed hands several times. East’s Koree Roseboro hit a pair of free throws early in the fourth quarter but that’s when LHS made
its move.
With 3:31 left to play, Faw made a couple of key baskets to help pull the Lady Wolves ahead for good.
First she scored on a layup while being fouled. She hit the free throw to give LHS the lead 30-29. After another LHS basket, she got two points on another
layup and then hit a shot to put the Lady Wolves up 36-29.
The Lady Mustangs did get back within four with Lindsey Smith’s 3-point play. But the rest of the way, East couldn’t get a basket even with several chances
under its basket as time ran out.
Roseboro, who had nine points, said her team didn’t have the fire it needed.
“We didn’t start the game off with intensity,” she said. “We need to work harder on offense. We’ll get them next time.”
Smith scored eight points while Toree Roseboro and Jessie Devine each had seven for the Lady Mustangs.
LHS players were happy to win the game.
“It was great,” said Danielle Sadler who had nine points. “We played a good game all four quarters with teamwork. Shonda made it good. We pulled it off.”
The JV boys game was close, too. The Wolves went up by seven points early but the Mustangs galloped back.
In the third quarter, with the game tied at 29, Kyle Snyder gunned a 3-pointer for Lincolnton. The shot keyed a 12-4 spurt that gave the Wolves room to breathe
the rest of the way.
In that run, Demory Williams hit all five of his points. First he scored on a fast break layup, then he popped a 3-pointer.
LHS went up 41-33 but Mustang Michael Lynch hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer to end the third quarter.
Lynch’s teammate Aaron Mintun added a basket to open the fourth quarter to close it at three. But after that, it was all Lincolnton.
Dustin Metts scored six straight points — a shot, layup and a pair of free throws — to give LHS a big 47-35 lead.
That was it.
The Wolves celebrated.
“It felt good to beat our rivals,” said Richard Lynch who scored eight points. “I didn’t have a good game but I‘m glad we got a win. It really builds up our
confidence. We’re 4-0.”
Edwin Barber and Metts both had nine points for LHS which had 11 different scorers.
East boys said errors killed their chances.
“We fell in their trap,” said JaMelle Lowery. “We made mistakes that were to their advantage. We just let the game slip away. We‘ll get them next time.”
Jason Smith, who hit a couple 3-pointers that kept East in it early, had 14. LaSharion Johnson pitched in with 13.
