Both LHS varsity teams use spurts to put the Mustangs away
TERRANCE THOMAS, LTN Staff Writer
December 18, 2002 - The Lincolnton varsity boys and girls basketball team rolled to solid wins over rival East Lincoln Tuesday.
In the girls game, Andrea Stroup’s 19 points led the way to a 55-49 win.
The boys game was all Wolves, 78-53. Darren Wilson paced LHS with a 24 points.
The girls’ game was tighter.
The Lady Wolves led at halftime 37-32 but couldn’t put the Lady Mustangs away until late in the game.
Midway in the fourth quarter, East center Sara Flemming, made a couple of plays to make it a one-point game, 47-46.
She hit a shot, blocked a shot on the LHS end and then scored a basket.
It stayed close. East’s Jennifer Henley scored on a fast break layup with 1:53 left to make it 50-49.
But that was all she wrote for the Lady Mustangs.
LHS sealed it with a hook shot from Ashlea Farley and several plays by the senior Stroup, who held the ball to take some time off the clock and then hit a
couple of free throws to end the threat.
Lindsey Sain chipped in with 12 points and Santana Edwards had 10 for the Lady Wolves.
Flemming led East with 23 while Leslie Marlowe added 14.
In the boys game, LHS made its move early and never looked back.
Lincolnton had a 10-6 lead in the first couple of minutes in the game. That’s when Randall Chambers hit a 3-pointer. Wilson followed with a trey of his own.
Eric Wilson followed with another 3-pointer.
After an East basket, Darren Wilson drove inside for a lay up and Jordy Jefferies got two more on a fast-break layup. That’s when Darren Wilson got the ball on
a fast break and threw down a jam. Wilson came right back and nailed a 3.
It was a 15-3 run to make it 23-8.
The rest of the way, when the Wolves heaved the ball up, it seemed to go in the basket.
It was 37-20 at the half, 55-39 at the end of the third.
A slow start killed East and LHS didn’t let up for the Mustangs to get back in the game.
“We played very well coming after two games we hadn’t played well,” said LHS coach Bob Cowie. “It’s a good win for us. It’s a confidence booster. We played
solidly on defense. We rebounded well, and played unselfishly on offense. We made extra passes to get everyone involved. That’s what we have to do to be a very good basketball team.”
For LHS, Eric Wilson and Jefferies both had 16.
East coach Neil Hodges said his team was going to be young and inexperienced this year. His squad will have to chalk this loss as learning experience.
For East, Jadarious Roseboro had the hot hand with 18. T.J. Smith chipped in with 11.
