150th win is special to West Wrestling coach

TERRANCE THOMAS, LTN Staff Writer

December 13, 2002 - West Lincoln head coach Butch Ross will remember his 150th  career win.

He didn’t know about it but he daughters dug up the information and told after his squad defeated the No. 1 team in 3-A, East Gaston Tuesday at home.

The Rebels are 16-0 and everybody’s what it takes.

“The whole team is wrestling solid,” he said. “We’re young. We have a lot of 10th graders. We only have three or four seniors. The young kids are stepping up.”

West Lincoln will compete in the Alleghany Duals on Saturday.

LINCOLNTON

Coach Joe Pollard’s squad is 3-3 but was scheduled to take on East Burke Thursday.

Pollard said his team is doing pretty well.

Senior Jason Hammonds is 6-0 in the heavy weight category. Dameon Graham, also a senior, is 5-1 at 152.

Sophomore Joe Wilson, a 103-pound category wrestler, is “really coming on,” according to Pollard. and Mitch Hawn, junior, has taken on the “hardest people” and that experience should pay dividends when conference rolls around.

EAST LINCOLN

A win over Cherryville put the Mustangs at 5-9.

“We’re really young,” said East coach Cain Beard. “We’re trying to get these kids mat time.

“The biggest thing that hurts us is that we don’t have a feeder program (there’s not wrestling teams at East Middle and Pumpkin Center Middle). Everybody in our conference (Big South 3-A, which is primarily Gaston County) does. That’s our down side,” Beard said.

The up side for the Mustangs is Brandon Swengros, 12-1 on the year.

His only loss came when he wrestled up to 171 pounds.

Joe Hanks is 6-3 but recently beat a wrestler from Hickory who was raked seventh in the Super 32. All of Hanks’ losses have come when he has wrestled up.
