West kids meet football stars

By JEREMY ASHTON, LTN Staff Writer

December 11, 2002 - While most students were getting back into the routine of a full school day, Dustin Hester was in Charlotte.

Hester and six other student-athletes from West Lincoln High School, accompanied by athletics director Wayne Navey and football coach Mike Harrill, attended a luncheon Monday at the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

While there, the group from West and several other high school students from around the area met the five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Award, given annually to the best defensive player in college football.

This was the second year in a row that West was represented at the luncheon.

“I thought it was really neat last year for the kids to get to hear from college players because they spoke about the importance of academics as well as athletics and about character,” said West Principal Debra Morris, who attended last year.

Arizona State’s Terrell Suggs, Maryland’s E.J. Henderson, Georgia’s David Pollack, Kansas State’s Terrence Newman and Notre Dame’s Shane Walton talked about their college experiences and fielded questions from the crowd.

Hester, a sophomore who eventually wants to be a high school teacher and coach, seemed impressed by what he heard. He also carried away a new appreciation of the work college athletes have to do.

“Once you get into college you just can’t quit studying,” he said. “When all five of them were asked if they could change one thing about college, they all said they’d change their freshman year and study more.”

After listening to the five finalists, Hester, who plays football and baseball and wrestles for West, had his own idea about who should take the award.

“I like Terrence Newman; I think he has a good chance to win it this year,” he said.

The voters, however, didn’t see things Hester’s way. Suggs, who set a national record with 22 sacks, received the trophy Monday night.

The six other West students who attended the luncheon were: Zeb Elmore, Will Tallent, Katie Thornburg, Sheena Simpson, Brandon Auten and Brent Gates.
