December 2, 2002 - VALE — The East Burke junior varsity defeated West Lincoln in the semifinals Friday and Cherryville Saturday in the finals to win the
West Lincoln Coaches vs. Cancer junior varsity basketball tournament.
In the finals match, East Burke, by far the class of the four-team field, cruised past the Ironmen 87-45.
East Burke was a last-minute replacement for Maiden who dropped out of the tournament.
This game was never close. Burke led at the half 48-24.
Michael Watson led the Cavaliers with 19 points. Teammates Doug Procter and Landon Huffman both had 10.
The hosts Rebels did win the consolation game against West Iredell Saturday.
Both teams got off to a slow start, with the Warriors and Rebels both only scoring 15 in the first half. However, West Lincoln was able to break away in the
fourth quarter, winning the game 50-43.
Ryan Huffman had a strong game with 19 points. Freshman forward Paul Chambers, also got into double digits with 10 points.
Azario Atkins played well for West Iredell, scoring 12 points to lead his team.
West Lincoln head coach, Jason Kingery, was pleased with his teams effort but he said it’s still early in the season.
“We were a little rusty,” he said. “We have a lot of work to do, but that is what JV ball is all about.”
All proceeds of the tournament went to the Duke Research Field to help fight cancer. During the whole tournament, over $1,000 were raised for the cause.
Next year, the tournament is scheduled to double in size, with eight teams playing instead of four.
