Rebels fare well in BB&T

Dec. 31. 2001 - CHERRYVILLE — The West Lincoln boys almost made it to the championship game of the BB & T Holiday Classic, losing a two-point squeaker to Cherryville in the semifinals.

But the Rebels eased the disappointment of that loss by beating Rosman 72-54 on Saturday to earn a respectable third-place finish in the three-day event.

East falls in finals; LHS has poor showing

Dec. 31, 2001 - DENVER — Tournament Most Valuable Player Darien Fish hit four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 15 points to lead Mooresville to a 51-45 win over East Lincoln to win the First Charter Holiday Classic championship Saturday night.

But it could have been East Lincoln’s title.

Victory Christian beats LHS boys; East boys win, girls falls

Dec. 28, 2001 - DENVER — Be careful what you do against somebody, because that somebody may used it back on you.

Lincolnton’s boys basketball team penetrate inside the Victory Christian defense and scored a lot of first points in the first half.

BB&T: West Lincoln pounds Madison Co., S. Point tops Lady Rebels

Dec.28, 2001 - CHERRYVILLE — Zach Franklin did not start the game for West Lincoln. But he was there when the Rebels needed him most in a 56-47 win over Madison County Thursday in the opening round of the BB & T Holiday Classic.

A backup point guard, Franklin came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points as the Rebels (4-5) advanced to tonight's semifinal at 8:30 against host Cherryville.

Football locals up for AP all-state, Coach of the Year

Dec. 24, 2001 - Several area players are  nominated for the Associated Press all-state team.

Two coaches Lincolnton’s Scott Cloninger and East Lincoln Jim Ruark, are up for AP high school coach of the year.

Lincolnton linebacker Charlie Stroup, running back Damien Forney and tight end Rafael Corella along with West Lincoln kicker Chris Halubka have been selected as candidates for the team. Member sports writers will vote for certain number of players for each position.

LHS boys fall in OT; girls hold on to win

Dec. 24, 2001 - Ask Michael Jordan what’s the secret of winning basketball games.

He’ll say, “Better eat these Wheaties.”

After watching the Lincolnton-Newton-Conover girls and basketball games, he’ll probably say, “Better make those free throws.”

Lady Mustangs top Ashbrook, boys fall

Dec. 21, 2001 - DENVER — Both the East Lincoln-Ashbrook boys and girls game were similar.

The winning teams took away the inside game of the other team to win big.

Dec. 19, 2001 - The Lincolnton JV Lady Wolves rallied to defeat South Point Friday, 29-28.

Danielle Sadler led the way with 10 points while Summer Harrison had eight.

Also scoring were Lauren Sain (6), Essence Hunter (3) and Ashley Tipton (2).

Dec. 17 - VALE — The student has beaten the teacher.

St. Stephens wrestling head coach Billy Baker was once a student in current West Lincoln head coach Butch Ross’ class in middle school.

Baker went on and won a state championship for West Lincoln..

Dec. 17 - West Lincoln High's Cory Norman pins Starmount's Ryan Messer in the135-pound weight class during the tournament Saturday attended by teams from nine schools, including the three Lincoln high schools. St. Stephen's High of Hickory won the tournament.

2A Midwest All Conference Selections

Dec. 14 - Damien Forney here with the ball against Burlington Cummings last week was named the 2A Midwest  Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

Seven Wolves joined Forney on the all conference team (Clarence Curry, Charlie Stroup, Darren Eaker, Junior Smith, Richard Locklin, Derek Curl and Rafael Corella. West Lincoln's Justin Pearson and Steven Peeler was named as well.
Here are some all conference selections from other sports. Rebels hit free throws to beat West Iredell, West girls fall

Dec. 14 - To win a in close game, free throws and defense are vital.

Thursday night, the West Lincoln boys basketball team took care of business in both of those departments to beat West Iredell, 77-65.

With the game tied and six minutes to play, the Rebels made just four baskets the rest of the way but they held West Iredell to just two buckets in that same period.

West Lincoln Duals will have a body slam of good action

Dec. 14 - When it comes to wrestling, the West Lincoln Duals is one of the premiere wrestling events in the area.

Locals West Lincoln, East Lincoln and Lincolnton will be some of the competitors in Saturday’s event.

East takes down Cherryville & S. Point

Dec. 12 - CHEERYVILLE — Zak Roddey led East Lincoln with two pins as the Mustangs’ wrestling team won a tri-match over South Point and host Cherryville Tuesday.

East defeated 3A Big South Conference foe South Point 64-19. The match is designated as non-conference. Against the home team Ironmen, East hung on to win 48-27.

West wrestlers raid Kings Mountain

Dec. 12 - On Monday the West Lincoln Wrestlers defeated Kings Mountain, 42-28. West now has a record of 9-2.

Winners for West were Jeremy Pearson with a pin, Daniel Scronce with pin, Steele Barber with a pin, Josh Hullette by a 4-0 decision, Chris Godfrey with a pin, Cory Norman with a pin, Eric Steele by a 7-0 decision, and in the heavy weight category, Aaron Terry with a pin.

West will host the West Lincoln Duals on Saturday.

East boys gets strong win, girls come up short

Dec. 12 - DENVER — The Mustangs looked a little out of synch offensively out of the gate but applied their patented pressure defense to baffle Bessemer City to win 53-38.

East worked the ball inside to their advantage early, using the combination of big men Blake Ketner and Jason Burgess to turn a three-point first quarter lead into a nine-point edge at the half, 26-17.

Cummings stuns Wolves with last-second field goal

Dec. 10 - BURLINGTON — “It heart deep inside,” said Lincolnton defensive lineman Joey Beal. “It was like someone took something from you and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

The Lincolnton Wolves had held the powerful Cummings offense to no points and one first down (that one came by  a penalty) in for more 23 minutes of the second half in the 2A state semifinals.

Cummings played a goal-line defense all game to make it tough for Willam Lineberger (12), above, and Damien Forney (19), below, to run in Friday's 2A West Final.
