Rebels fare well in BB&T

Dec. 31. 2001 - CHERRYVILLE — The West Lincoln boys almost made it to the championship game of the BB & T Holiday Classic, losing a two-point squeaker to Cherryville in the semifinals.

But the Rebels eased the disappointment of that loss by beating Rosman 72-54 on Saturday to earn a respectable third-place finish in the three-day event.

West Lincoln finished 2-1 for the tournament and improved 5-6 overall heading into Midwest 2A Conference play this week.

The West Lincoln girls also emerged from the tournament on an upbeat note, downing Madison County 56-41 Saturday to take fifth place in the 16-team field.

The Lady Rebels won two games in the consolation bracket after dropping a close decision to South Point in the opening round.

West Lincoln boys coach Jason Kingery summed up the mood of the team after the win over Rosman.

"I wish we could have  been playing for a championship, but we will take third place," Kingery said. "We played pretty good overall ball coming off an emotional loss last night (Friday). I think the kids are happy with this."

Jeremy Parker scored 15  points as the Rebels dominated Rosman from the opening tap.

Zach Franklin added 13 points and Adam Watkins contributed 11 for West Lincoln, which exploded for 31 points in the fourth quarter to win with ease.

In Saturday's exciting semifinal, the Rebels had the ball and a chance to win in the waning seconds, but Franklin's 3-point attempt from the top of the key hit the back of the rim and bounced away.

Jason Browne's two free throws with 20 seconds left broke a 62-62 tie as Cherryville held on for the win.

The Rebels rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game 62-62 on Lathan Fowler's putback. Franklin paced West Lincoln in scoring with 14 points.

West Lincoln's girls played their best game of the tournament Saturday in beating Madison for third place.

Guard Kaylon Carpenter led a balanced attack with 14 points, followed by Stephanie Sain with 13 and Lily Tallent with 12.

Tallent, a sophomore, pulled down 14 rebounds, while Jackie Derr collected seven boards. Heather Helms was a defensive standout with five blocked shots to go with six rebounds.

In Friday's consolation round, West Lincoln's girls beat Chase 43-37 behind 11 points from Jackie Derr. The Lady Rebels trailed 28-23 in the second half before rallying.

In the championship games Saturday, the Rosman girls beat Cherryville 69-65 and the Cherryville boys downed Blacksburg, S.C., 84-82.

Ashton Barton scored 28 points for unbeaten Rosman (9-0) and was named tournament MVP. Abby Owens scored 36 points for Cherryville (10-2) in a losing cause.

Antone Little was a force inside for the Cherryville boys, scoring 28 points to earn tourney MVP honors. The Ironmen (7-5) took their first lead with three minutes left and salted away the win at the foul line, where they scored their last 10 points.

For the Cherryville boys, it was their fourth BB & T Classic title in the last five years.
