East falls in finals; LHS has poor showing

Dec. 31, 2001 - DENVER — Tournament Most Valuable Player Darien Fish hit four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 15 points to lead Mooresville to a 51-45 win over East
Lincoln to win the First Charter Holiday Classic championship Saturday night.
But it could have been East Lincoln’s title.
The host team Mustangs put together five solid halves of basketball.
The first two halves came on Friday when they defeated conference foe Forestview in the first round, the next two came on Friday when they crushed the
tournament’s No. 1 seed Victory Christian in the semifinals.
Against Mooresville, the Mustangs went ahead 25-20 at the half and seemed to be in control especially on the boards.
Then the bottom fell out.
The Blue Devils got hot and began to sizzle from the outside.
Point guard Guy McConnell opened the second half with a 3-pointer and a minute later hit another to give Mooresville a 29-27 lead.
The Mustangs tied it back up but in the last minute of the third quarter, Fish canned back-to-back 3-pointers. Teammate Rakeem Brawley then scored on a
layup and was fouled. He hit the free throw and Mooresville was up 40-31.
The Blue Devils outscored the Mustangs 20-8 in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter East made it close. Blake Ketner shot with 1:21 made it 46-43.
But East couldn’t get closer the rest of the way.
“We went down to pieces after they started hitting their shots,” said center Jason Burgess. “Then we started missing ours. We were trying to force it.”
Despite the loss, things are looking up for East Lincoln. The Mustangs had a good tournament, beat a couple of good teams and made improvements.
“We’re going to get better and better,” said East coach Neil Hodges. “We played extremely well in the tournament, we gained confidence and we will continue to get better. I’m pleased with
the progress.”
Tripp Miller scored 12 to lead the Mustangs while Corey Howard added 10. Both made the all-tournament team.
East will try to beat Forestvew again Friday on the road.
The East Lincoln girls had a tough tournament. After losing to Bandys Thursday, the Lady Mustangs lost a heartbreaker to North Gaston 50-49 on Friday then recouped and pulled out a 45-42 win against Charlotte Country Day on Saturday to finish seventh in the tourn
ament.
Tiffany Finandis had 13 points in Saturday’s game. Sabrina Abraham pitched in with 10, Sara Fleming and Shanna Rendleman each scored nine.
Rendleman was selected to the all-tournament team.
It was a horrible tournament for the Lincolnton Wolves boys basketball team.
The Wolves came into the tournament as the three-time defending champions.
But they were also eighth seed. That was an omen.
The Wolves lost all three games and finished last.
The Wolves were up 34-23 at the half against top-seeded Victory Christian on Thursday before falling 60-54. The Patriots outscored Lincolnton 18-9 in the
third quarter.
On Friday, it was the same against Forestview in consolation play. The Wolves went up 19-16 at the half, but was outscored 18-4 in the third quarter to lose 56-54.
“We don’t concentrate in the second half,” one player said.
Saturday in the seventh place game, it was over before the second half. Bandys beat the Wolves 62-57.
Eric Wilson, who scored 54 points in the three-game tournament and made the all-tournament team, had a team-high 18 in the game. Darren Wilson added 12
while Robbie Lewis had 11.
The Wolves will be back in action Friday when they travel to rival West Lincoln.
