Victory Christian beats LHS boys; East boys win, girls falls

TERRANCE THOMAS, LTN Staff Writer

Dec. 28, 2001 - DENVER — Be careful what you do against somebody, because that somebody may used it back on you.

Lincolnton’s boys basketball team penetrate inside the Victory Christian defense and scored a lot of first points in the first half.

In the second half, Victory Christian, a national private high school champion last year, copied the Wolves’ game plan drove inside and got baskets too.

But the difference was Victory Christian controlled the boards to rally back after trailing 34-23 at halftime to beat the Wolves 60-54 in the opening round of the First charter Holiday Tournament at East Lincoln.

In other local action at the tournament, the host Mustangs edged Big South 3A conference foe Forestview, 62-59.

The Lady Mustangs fell to Bandys 53-31.

Today’s action began at 10 a.m. and the last basket scored will be around 10 p.m.

The Lady Mustangs will play at 1 p.m. in the girls consolation round against North Gaston. The Wolves will play Forestview at 2:30 and the winning Mustangs will take on Victory Christian at 8:30 in the boys semifinals.

In the other boys semifinal Charlotte Country Day will hook horns with Mooresville at 5:30.

In the Lincolnton game, the Wolves trailed early 8-3 before outscoring the Patriots 13-4 to lead 16-12 at the end of the first quarter.

The Wolves extended their lead to 34-23 and looked as if they were going to put Victory Christian away early.

The Wolves’ Eric and Darren Wilson would used flashy moves and quickness and blow past the Patriots guards into the heart of the defense. Then would shoot or pass.

It was very effective. The Wolves also drew a lot of fouls. At one point, the Patriots had 10 fouls called on them to the Wolves 2. Two of the Patriots starters had three fouls before halftime.

Defensively, the Wolves could packed in their 2-3 zone because Victory Christian’s outside shooters were cold early.

In the second half, the Patriots adjusted, started making perimeter shots, started penetrating inside and began to control both boards too.

Point guard J.J. Wilson scored no points for the Patriots in the first quarter but starting hitting his shots, penetrating inside, getting rebounds. He finished with 19 points.

The effect on the Wolves was tremendous.

The Patriots outscored Lincolnton 37-20 in the second half At one point Victory Christian went on a 16-2 spurt.

But Lincolnton had a chance late after Eric Wilson hit a 3-pointer to make in a 56-54 game with 46 seconds left.

But the Wolves couldn’t do anything else, they missed three 3-point shots, three free throws while Victory Christian nailed four fouls shots at the end to seal it up.

“In the first half, we did great but we didn’t execute in the second half,” aid Lincolnton coach Bob Cowie. “Their size hurt us. We just didn’t hit and we were limited to one shot.”

Victory Christian had seven put back baskets.

Eric Wilson led the Wolves with 26 points but it was a long night Darren Wilson who had open looks but couldn’t get much to fall.

He finished with eight. Jeremy Degree (nine points) and Brian Finger (six) also contributed.

The loss by Lincolnton ends its reign of the tournament. The Wolves have won three straight years.

East Lincoln boys advance

East Lincoln pulled out a 62-59 win over Forestview.

Blake Ketner scored 14 points in the first half to lead the Mustangs. He finished with 15 to lead a balanced scoring attack.

Cory Howard (12 points), Tyrone Rendleman (nine), Tripp Miller (nine) and Jason Burgess (five) all pitched in for the Mustangs.

Assistant coach Chip ashton said the key to the Mustnags win were their control of the boards.

“The difference in the game is that we outrebounded them 33-21,” he said. “In the second half, they only got three defensive rebounds. We were in control. We either made our shots or got the rebound. It was probably the best game we’ve played all season.”

Lady Mustangs fall

East Lincoln dropped a 53-31 game to Bandys, the 2000 winner of the tournament.

Sarah Fleming (14) and Jennifer Henley (11) scored almost all of East Lincoln’s points.

Ashley Christian and Lindsey pope combined for 32 points for Bandys.
