Lady Mustangs top Ashbrook, boys fall

TERRANCE THOMAS, LTN Staff Writer

Dec. 21, 2001 - DENVER — Both the East Lincoln-Ashbrook boys and girls game were similar.

The winning teams took away the inside game of the other team to win big.

Credit of the strategies of East Lincoln girls and Ashbrook boys.

The Lady Mustangs defeated Ashbrook 48-34 and The Green Wave beat the Mustangs 63-39 in Friday’s Big South 3A Conference opener.

The Lady Mustangs’ zone caused many problems for Ashbrook. They packed their players in with a 2-3 zone and outrebounded the Lady Wave early in the game. Ashbrook’s center Katie McKoy didn’t score a point in the first half.

“The zone helped,” said Sabrina Abraham. “They had some big girls but they couldn’t get it inside the paint. We pulled it together and everybody played hard to win.”

Meanwhile offensively East pulled away by outscoring the Lady Wave 24-10 in the second quarter. The Lady Mustangs used a balance scoring attack to win.

“We spread the ball around,” Shanna Rendleman said. “We penetrated, reversed the ball to get open shots. When one person hit shots others became open.

“We’re making a big step from last year,” she said. “We only won one game last year. This year we already have two wins.”

Sarah Fleming led East with 11 points. Jennifer Henley scored 10 while Rendleman had 9. Tiffany Finandis pitched in with eight.

East was the hustling team from the start. Henley hit the first shot, then Ashley England stole the ball and scored on a fast break. Fleming hit a layup and East with a 6-0 lead was on its way.

East led 8-4 at the end of the first and led 15-10 before turning it on with a 15-4 run.

The Lady Mustangs hit open jumpers, drove inside and got layups and rebounds. Ashbrook scored just two baskets after the midway point of the quarter.

With a 32-14 halftime lead, East practically had it won. The third quarter was turnover city. But teams played sloppy basketball. With a nice cushion, East’s bench got some quality minutes.

Boys: Ashbrook beats East

The Green Wave used its size and excellent shooting to jump out to a 13-2 early lead and never look back in a huge win.

Ashbrook simply beat East inside and outside. The Green Wave dominated the inside with taller front line. They contested everything East tried to get inside. East’s starting frontcourt of Tripp Miller, Blake Ketner and Jason Burgess were held to a combined 10 points.

The Wave got extra shots on offense and limited East’s shots.

For Ashbrook, center Jazz Cathcart had 14 points. From the outside. point guard Brad Falls hit three 3-pointers early while teammate Jabar Adams (15 points) was driving inside and getting tough baskets.

“They had a height advantage,” said guard Arthur Whitt. “We had to shoot from the outside.”

Miller said the team missed a lot of close shots.

“We weren’t making easy shots,” Miller said. “They were hitting everything they threw up. They were playing tough defense. We couldn’t set our offense up. It hurt us in the long run.”

Ashbrook outscored East in each quarter. It was 13-4 then 34-15 at the half. The score at the end of the third was 47-27. Both benches were emptied in the fourth.

One bright spot for the Mustang was the play of Tyrone Rendleman, who came off the bench and poured in team
