West Lincoln Duals will have a body slam of good action

TERRANCE THOMAS, LTN Staff Writer

Dec. 14 - When it comes to wrestling, the West Lincoln Duals is one of the premiere wrestling events in the area.

Locals West Lincoln, East Lincoln and Lincolnton will be some of the competitors in Saturday’s event.

It’s so tough of event the host team has trouble in it.

“We have several teams that are ranked in the top ten in the state (in their class) competing this year,” West coach Butch Ross said. “It’s going to be real tough. There are going to be some dog fights. Everybody knows it’s tough. They take pride in winning.”

It’ll be a test of duration,. The event begins at 9:30 A.M.. The champion may not be decided until 3:30 p.m.

West Lincoln will open up with Tuscola at 9:30. The winner will come back and take on Starmount at 10:30.

Also at that time, St. Stephens (last year’s runner-up) will go against Southwest Guilford. Alleghany, the tournament’s defending champion, will take on East Lincoln, who defeated Cherryville and South Point Tuesday.

Kings Mountain came in third last year will go against Lincolnton.

The semi-finals will begin after lunch.

It should be day of battles.

“It’s going to be a tough dual match,” said East Linoln coach Jim Prevost. “There’s no slouch teams in this tournament. Our team has to be up for that.”

The Rebels are up for the challenge.

“We all have to get after it,” said Chris Godfrey. “Each person will have to suck it up, wrestle for six minutes. It’s a big challenge.”

This is a youthful group of West Lincoln players but they  say they have what it takes.

“We’ve got a young team,” said Josh Hullette. “We’re coming together and wrestling hard. We’ve beaten some top-ranked teams.”

The Rebels beat the 3A’s No. 1 team, East Gaston, last week. With that win under their belts they feel good about do well Saturday.

“We usually do pretty good in it,” said Cory Norman. “It’s going to be a lot of competition in it. I think we’re going to do OK.”
