Dec. 14 - To win a in close game, free throws and defense are vital.
Thursday night, the West Lincoln boys basketball team took care of business in both of those departments to beat West Iredell, 77-65.
With the game tied and six minutes to play, the Rebels made just four baskets the rest of the way but they held West Iredell to just two buckets in that same period.
Both teams were fouled.
West made 11 of 14 from that point on while the visiting warriors suffered at the line, hitting three of nine.
“We just
penetrated and got foul shots and made foul shots,” said West Lincoln coach Jason Kingery. “That was a difference, we won. It was a team effort. Thatks for the fans and parents support.”
West Lincoln had to fight for almost the entire game.
The Rebels trailed early 5-2 then rolled off a 14-4 run to go up 16-9 but the Warriors came back and tied the game with seconds left in the first quarter.
However, Jeremy Detter canned a 3-pointer at the buzzer to put the Rebels back up.
The same identical thing practically happened in the second quarter.
West Lincoln slipped away to go up 28-20 but the Warriors come back with 10 unanswered points to take the lead 30-28.
After both teams trade baskets, Rebel Lathan Fowler guns a trey at the horn.
It was more of the same in the third, the Warriors jump out early but West Lincoln ties it up.
It stays tied for most of the quarter but the Rebels get six straight point to lead by three going into the fourth.
At that point, West Iredell center Zack Tomlin was hard to stop. He scored nine points in the third quarter to give him 17 going into the fourth.
He hit a free throw with six minutes left to play in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 58 and give him 18 on the night.
Two minutes of play later, Tomlin had to come out with a bloody nose. He never returned. One person close to the said he nose was broken.
After the game was tied at 58, West Lincoln pulled away for good.
Daniel Ward and Jeremy Detter both hit a pair of free throws to open up a 7-0 run.
When West Iredell tried to get closer with 2:16 left, Ward rebounded and missed shot, put it back in and was fouled. He made the free throw and that gave the
Rebels a nine-point lead. They cruise the rest of the way.
“We played with more heart and played all out,” said Owen Poole. “It’s just another win and we’ve go to keep going.”
“Our defense was real good,” said Jeremy Deter. We picked up our intensity and played defense all around. We played team ball.”
Fowler finished with a team-high 18 points and Jeremy Parker poured in 15. The two combined for 17 points in the third quarter.
Zach Franklin, Detter, Zach Franklin and Ward each had 10. Poole chipped in with eight.
West girls fall 50-43

It all started when Kisha Morrison
popped a 3-pointer. Then Stephanie Sain gunned two straight 3-pointers. When Kim Scercy hit a pair of free throws, it was 46-42.
With 3:30 left, West Iredell had an answer to cool off them. The Lady Warriors went into a stall offense and milked 30 to 50 seconds at a time.
That took West Lincoln out of their game. The Lady Rebels made three turnovers and didn’t hit a basket the rest of the way.
