East takes down Cherryville & S. Point

TERRANCE THOMAS, LTN Staff Writer

Dec. 12 - CHEERYVILLE — Zak Roddey led East Lincoln with two pins as the Mustangs’ wrestling team won a tri-match over South Point and host Cherryville Tuesday.

East defeated 3A Big South Conference foe South Point 64-19. The match is designated as non-conference. Against the home team Ironmen, East hung on to win 48-27.

In the other match, Cherryville took down the Indians 54-19.

With several players hurt, East coach Jim Prevost had to get some of his players to wrestle above their weight.

No problem.

Those players who took on opponents that were heavier than they was won nine out of 13 matches.

“We had kids on the injured list,” Prevost said. “Some of the kids filled in nicely. We had to bump up our lineup. Everybody did a super job. We’ve got a good team. I’m real proud. We’re starting to pull together. We’re wrestling a tough schedule. We thank the parents for their support.”

Joe Hanks went up from 112 to take on South Point and Cherryville’s better wrestlers at 119. Prevost credited his team before self attitude.

Roddey who normally wrestles at the 130 stepped up and pinned South Point’s 135 and then took on Cherryville’s 140 Hunter Digh.

Roddey was almost pinned himself but fought Digh off and then came back and pinned him.

“I thought I was going to be pinned,” Roddey said. “I wasn’t focused. I came out aggressive and made mistakes at the beginning. He thought he had me. But he made a mistake. I used it and I knew I was stronger than he was. I just rode him.”

Nick Smith moved up almost 30 pounds from 160 to 189 and won his matches.

“I just wanted to see if I could do it,” Smith said. Coach said it would help the team down the road.”

Perhaps the biggest duel of the night was the match between East’s Russell Mahaffey and Cherryville’s Raymond Gerren at 103.

There was eight reverses, four take downs and two near falls.

Mahaffey looked like he was going to be pinned several times and seemed to have Gerren in control too.

But finally Mahaffey held Geren down for the count.

“It went back and forth the whole match,” Mahaffey said. “Anyone of us could have won it. We were equally matched. We both had to dig deep and keep on going.

“I found my self right in position,” he said. “He just kinda folded up. I put him in the cradle and that was it. It’s great ot get the win. It was a lot of pressure with the match pretty close.”

Mustangs Rolo Rodriguez, JoJo Dellinger, Josh Cordosa and Ryan Swengross each had win in both matches.

East got six forfeits in the South Point match. Joey Davis, Justin Richardson, James Hollifield and DonDon Smith each had one.

Against the Ironmen, Jason Harkey and Matt Bowen got wins off forfeits.

The win ups East’s record to 6-4.

The Mustangs like were their team is going.

“We’re doing a whole lot better than last year,” said Dellinger who is 14-0 and ranked fourth in 3A at 125. “This is our fourth coach in four years. Coach Prevost is turning things around. He’s very dedicated.”
