East boys gets strong win, girls come up short

JAY MILLER, LTN Correspondent

Dec. 12 - DENVER — The Mustangs looked a little out of synch offensively out of the gate but applied their patented pressure defense to baffle Bessemer City to win 53-38.

East worked the ball inside to their advantage early, using the combination of big men Blake Ketner and Jason Burgess to turn a three-point first quarter lead into a nine-point edge at the half, 26-17.

After finishing the third quarter up 38-30, the Mustangs’ Corey Howard started the fourth with a pass down low to Tripp Miller for two of his game high 12 points making it 40-30.

Thereafter, East’s seniors of Howard, Burgess and Miller stepped it up a notch both offensively and defensively to put the game away.

East outscored Bessemer City 15-8 in the fourth quarter. With big plays from Tripp Webb, Howard, Miller and Burgess, it was senior time at the Mustang Corral.

Howard hit a couple of baskets and made some solid passes solid passes. Miller scored a bucket too but had a steal and a block. Burgess chipped in two baskets of his own.

When asked what worked well for them, East’s Jason Burgess said “offensive rebounding was the key at the end.”.

Blake Ketner thought his team outhustled the Yellow Jackets and attributed their success to “the effort they’ve put into our motion offense.” Miller said the Mustangs were getting good looks inside.

Whatever the answer is, East had them tonight. The Mustangs advanced to 4-0.

Relying heavily on Shameka Smith’s game high 33 points, Bessemer City defeated East for the second time in two weeks by the score of 58-44.

The Lady Mustangs ran out early, controlling the tempo to lead 11-4 at the end of the first quarter.

But the Lady Yellow Jackets chipped away at the lead and came back strong in the third to move ahead.

The Lady Mustangs did have a chance late. With 2:27 remaining East’s Jennifer Henley sank two free throws bringing East to within four at 46-42.

However, with the game on the line, Bessemer City’s Smith again took charge, scoring seven points including five of six free throws down the stretch leading Bessemer City to victory.
