On senior night at West Lincoln's Douglas Leonhardt Memorial Stadium, the game was dominated by a pair of sophomores. Anthony Wingo ran for 116 yards on twelve carries and scored
all three Chase touchdowns en route to a 20-12 victory over the Rebels.
The first half saw each team move the ball effectively between the twenties, but neither was able to score until Wingo's nine-yard run with 8:07 to play before halftime. After the
extra point attempt failed, the Trojans led 6-0, and would take that lead into the break.
Early in the fourth quarter, sophomore fullback Paul Chambers put West Lincoln on the board with a one-yard run. The extra point attempt was no good, and the score was tied at six.
On the ensuing kickoff, O'neal Chestnut returned the kick to the 48 yard line, giving the Trojans great field position.
Two plays later, the Rebels recovered an apparent fumble. Due to an inadvertent whistle, the down was replayed, nullifying the turnover.
Chase was then able to put together a scoring drive, capped by Wingo's second touchdown of the night. This time a 10-yard run with 7:04 to play. Garry Lowrance added the two point conversion, and the Trojans led 14-6.
The Rebels were not finished, however, as they went on a 54 yard, nine play touchdown drive of their own. Chambers five-yard scoring run, his second of the night, pulled West to
within two. The two point conversion run came up short, and the Rebels trailed 14-12 with 3:02 on the game clock.
West then attempted an onside kick, but they were unsuccessful. The Trojans proceeded to march 55 yards on seven plays for another score, as Wingo would get into the end zone for
his third touchdown of the night. Wingo's 20-yard run gave Chase a 20-12 advantage with 1:04 to play.
The Rebels had one last chance to pull even, but turned the ball over on downs after driving to the Trojan 31-yard line during the final minute of play.
Chambers led all rushers on the night, gaining 188 yards on 24 carries and scoring both Rebel touchdowns. Taylor Woodie completed five passes for 56 yards for West Lincoln.
The Rebels had a good defensive effort from several different players, including the defensive line.
After the game, head coach Butch Parker had nothing but praise for his team.
“I’m proud that this team played hard throughout the season, despite the difficult schedule,” he said.
The Rebels close out their season with a 1-10 record, 1-6 in the Midwest 2A.
Chase improves to 6-4 overall, 3-4 in conference play and will travel to Graham on Friday night for a first round playoff game.
