West boys turn things around

Nov. 30 - VALE — What a difference a couple of days make.

West Lincoln boys basketball team lost by 45 points to east Lincoln Tuesday but Thursday night at home against Cherryville, it was the Rebels who were putting the hurt on folks.

West Lincoln broke a tie game wide open with a 24-4 run in the third quarter and held on to beat the Ironmen 65-56.

LMS volleyball falls in tri-match against PCMS and King’s Mountain

Lincolnton Middle School volleyball team lost their tri-match Monday against Pumpkin Center 2-15, 17-15, 12-15; and King’s Mountain 13-15, 2-15.

Scoring for the Lady Wildcats are Ale Arce 10, Charlotte Clark 10, Amanda Barnhardt 8, Kendall Bradley 6, Ashley Broadway 5, Adrienne Costner 3, Brittany Nicholson 3, Jessie Cline 1.

Rebels’ wrestling team beats East and fares well in tourney

Nov. 30 - West Lincoln wrestling team defeated East Lincoln 51-24 at home on Wednesday.

West’s Jeremy Pearson pinned East’s Russell Manaffe in the 103 match. At 112, East’s Joe Hanks won by a 7-2 decision over Wesley Brown.

West’s Zeb Elmore pinned Rolando Rodriguez in the 119 while Zeb’s teammate Josh Hullette pinned Zack Roddey at 125. East’s JoJo Dellinger pinned Chris Godfrey at 130.

Nov. 28 - DENVER — One sign at East Lincoln High School Tuesday night said “Win for No. 10.”

No. 10 is the number that Lady Mustang Nicole Bowman wore. Bowman died in a car wreck in August..

WLMS wrestling team beats Crest

Nov. 28 - The West Lincoln Middle School wrestling team defeated Crest 70-18 at their game Tuesday night. Their record is now 7-0.

Winners for West were Payden House, Zeke Elmore, Logan Shronce, Chase Harbinson, Tyler Carpenter, Justin Mayfield, Ben Powell, Jack Wombough, Matt Avery, Dustin Ebert, Ryan Rhodes, Aron Wellman, Tyler Wilfong, Darrell Friday, Travis Neal, James Pearson, Kyle Bostic, Kenny Reed, and James Goodman.

The next match for West will be Thursday at East Rutherford.

Mustangs lose playoff game, finish up-and-down season

Nov. 26 - The East Lincoln Mustangs have had a lot of trouble with the playoffs this season.

First they were in, then they were out, then they were in again.

At last, the decision was made final Friday night as the Mustangs traveled to Monroe to face the undefeated Piedmont Panthers in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.

Wolves blow out Cavaliers; advance to face Shelby

Nov. 26 - When East Rutherford's Kevin Logan raced 60 yards for a touchdown on the third play of the game, it looked like the beginning of a long night for the home team.

But Logan's burst through the middle proved to be one of the few bright spots for the Cavaliers on a rainy night at Lincolnton Memorial Stadium.

Quicker & bigger Lady Rebel team looks to improve

Nov. 21 - VALE — The West Lincoln Lady Rebels varsity basketball team will try to improve on last year 3-20 season.

There’s some hope with seven players including two starters returning.

“We’re basically a young team,” said head coach Allen Hoyle. “We’ll rely on our senior leadership. I think we can improve. We’re a little quicker and a little taller. We’ll use our quickness and try to run and press a lot. We’ll have to take one game and build on it.”

Going for the pin

Nov. 21 - West Lincoln Middle School wrestler Matt Avery works his way to get a pin in Monday's 103 weight class meet against Chase. The Chiefs wrestling team defeated Chase 78-12. Their record is now 5-0 for the season. Winners for WLMS were Jack Wombough, Matt Avery, Dustin Ebert, Chase Harbison, Tyler Wilfong, Garett Gilbert, Darrell Friday, Daniel Smith, James Pearson, Kyle Bostic, Kenny Reed, Matt Hovis, James Goodman, Payden Houser, Zeke Elmore, Corey Beam, Logan Scronce, Tony Hester.  West Lincoln will have their next match Tuesday at Crest Middle School.

West Lincoln’s goal is to make the playoffs

Nov. 21 - VALE — There’s a boys basketball conference championship banner in the West Lincoln gym that says 1962, 1982.

New coach Jason Kingery knows it’s 2002. He’s not asking for a conference title this year.

“Our weakness is our tradition,” he said. “Our goal is to finish at least fourth (which qualifies the Rebels for a playoff spot). We’ve got our work cut out for us but I know we can. High school athletics is all about confident.”

Hoops for Hope 3-on-3 basketball tournament fundraiser

Students in the School of Technology’s DECA program are having a 3-on-3 basketball tournament Saturday at Lincolnton High school gym.

The event will raise money for the American Cancer Society and honor a local instructor Tammy Gilmore.

Nov. 21 - Several months ago Paul Schaarsschmidt’s teen-age daughter posed a question that stunned him:

“Dad, can I play football?”

“What?!”

He quickly recovered, then came back with his own question: “Is this a mixed team with the guys?”

It was.

Lincolnton to host East Rutherford in second round of playoffs Friday

Nov. 19 - REIDSVILLE — It was “smash mouth” football.

Take the football and ram it straight into the heart of your opponents’ defense and make them buckle.

That was part of Lincolnton head coach Scott Cloninger's ultra-conservative game plan.

WLMS wins over LMS in volleyball

The West Lincoln Middle School Lady Chiefs defeated the Lincolnton Middle School Lady Wildcats in three of four games played Thursday. Scores were 12-15, 15-4, 15-4, 15-6. The Lady Chiefs are now 4-1, Lady Wildcats 1-3.

Leading players for West were Shana Black, Haley Boyles, Jessie Watts, and Anna Knight.

Nov. 14 - The East Lincoln football team was eliminated from the 3A state playoffs Tuesday.

It was not by Monroe’s Piedmont High School, its playoff opponent Friday night but by a judge.

West gets a bad case of the Dewberrys

Nov. 12 - VALE — West Lincoln jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter but couldn’t hold on as Chase scored a touchdown in the second, third and fourth quarters to spoil Senior Night at West Lincoln with a 28-13 win.

The Rebels opened with a 19-yard field goal from Chris Halubka.

Lincolnton edges Cavs, travel to Reidsville Friday

Nov. 12 - FOREST CITY — One play defined Lincolnton's defensive effort in the second half of Friday's regular season finale against East Rutherford.

The score was 21-20 in favor of East Rutherford midway through the third quarter, and the Cavaliers had the ball deep in their own territory.

East falls S. Point, will face Piedmont in playoffs

Nov. 12 - BELMONT — Close your eyes. It isn’t pretty.

South Point 57, East Lincoln 14.

East Lincoln’s football team ran into a South Point Machine Friday night for maybe a MidSouth 3A Conference title for both teams.

The Red Raiders Red Bone offense rolled up 451 yards, took advantage of four East Lincoln fumbles and jumped out to a 35-0 lead before halftime.

JV Wolves cruises

Nov. 9 - The Lincolnton junior varsity football team ended it season with a bang Thursday night.

East Rutherford entered the game at 9-0 but the JV Wolves pounded the JV Cavaliers 36-12 with a solid offensive performance it their season finale.

The JV Wolves struck by air. Quarterback Pedro Fonseca connected with receiver Eric Wilson three times for touchdowns (20, 15 and 35 yards out).

Lincoln County Bass Masters held tournament

The Lincoln County Bass Master’s Club held it’s October Tournament on Lake Wateree, S.C., Oct. 27.

Waylon Pitts won the tournament with a catch of 5 lbs. 12 oz.. Chan White finished 2nd and caught the tourney’s bug fish for the day with a 3 lb. 12 oz. fish. Rounding out the Top 5 was Aaron Dixon third; Coleman Hawkins fourth; and Mitch Burgin fifth.

A Rebel with a kick

Nov. 7 - Early in the season some folks knew West Lincoln’s Chris Halubka could kick a football.

He had kicked a 45-yarder during the 2000 season.

But still he was an afterthought.

That was until September 14 when the Rebels played Cherryville.

Halubka's long field goals against Cherryville earlier in the year has captured attention.

East Rutherford too much for WL Rebels

Nov. 5 - VALE — It was another tough night for the West Lincoln football team.

Big, bad East Rutherford came to town and didn’t take any prisoners.

The visiting Cavaliers rolled up over 400 yards of offense, almost 300 rushing and blanked the Rebels 33-0.

Wolves chew up Bandys, clinch playoff berth

Nov 5 - Lincolnton’s seniors would not be denied on their special night.

 The Wolves’ 23-member senior class bowed out in style in their final regular season home game Friday, rolling into the state 2A playoffs with a 43-14 thumbing of Bandys.

Nov 5 - DENVER — Create your own destiny and things will take care of themselves.

That’s the motto of East Lincoln head coach Jim Ruark.

It may be a scientific theory now after what the Mustangs did..

Nov. 2 - On Halloween night the East Lincoln football team killed their fumble ghosts and interception goblins.

"We exercised our turnover demons,” said East coach Jim Ruark.

Maybe it had something to do what the Mustangs had for a pregame meal.

Mustangs run in State Meet

Nov.2 - DENVER — A funny thing happened to the East Lincoln cross country boys last week at the 3A regional in Hendersonville.

They qualified for the state meet.

"We were surprised," said East coach Carla Townsend. "We had a really good meet. Four of our top five runners had personal bests. I knew we had the capability. We stepped it up a notch. We're very honored to go."
