The Lincolnton men’s and West Lincoln women’s teams had similar goals at the county championship Tuesday in the Midwest 2A Conference Cross Country Meet at West Lincoln.
For the Lincolnton men, their goal was accomplished as they nudged a reluctant East Rutherford team 43-57 (the lowest score wins).
The Wolves had six runners finish in the top 15: Luis Soto 17:44 (2nd), Jared Webb 17:57 (3rd), Arce Felipe 19:31 (11th), Mike Mauney 19:34 (13th), Andrew Mauney 19:43 (14th) and Chi
Ming Lai 19:52 (15th).
Head coach Jeff Cloninger was very happy with his mens’ performance.
“The boys team was very happy to win. They worked hard all season and deserved the win,” he said.
Although the team enjoyed success, Soto and Webb were disappointed.
“They were disappointed, but they will bounce back and lead us Oct. 25 at West Henderson in the Western Regional,” Cloninger said.
The top runner from West Lincoln was John Harkey who ran a 20:29 and finished in the 19th position.
On the women’s side, the goal of winning a conference championship was just out of reach for the Lady Rebels.
The Rebels ran a strong race, but were beat out by a tough Shelby team 43-65.
They had three runners to finish in the top 15: Brittany Beeker 22:42 (1st), Kelly Pittman 24:31 (9th) and Kristine Leatherman 26:25 (15th).
Beeker captured the conference championship to go along with her three-time county champion title.
The top runners from Lincolnton were Beri Huitt who finished in second place for the second consecutive year, running a 23:47. Emily Mackie ran a 26:53. good enough to round out the top
20.
The Midwest 2A All-Conference teams were announced after the meet as voted on by the coaches.
On the men’s side Louis Soto, Jared Webb, Felipe Arce, Mike Mauney and Andrew Mauney, all representing Lincolnton, were named all-conference.
On the women’s side Brittany Beeker, Beri Huitt, Kelly Pittman and Kristine Leatherman received the honor. Beeker, Pittman and Leatherman run for the Lady Rebels. Huitt runs for the
Lady Wolves.
