Published October10, 2003

By JOHN MARK BROOKS, Staff Writer

————————————

It was an emotional night for volleyball head coach J.T. Spanos and his East Lincoln Lady Mustangs.

The Mustangs completed a perfect 14-0 conference record and racked up the Big South 3A championship with a win over South Point 25-10, 26-24, 21-25, 25-19 (3-1).

Six seniors played their last regular season home game: Mallory Barrick, Katy Dellinger, Stephanie Horne, Brooke Michael, Dana Rudisill and Jessica Towery.

Michael led the Lady Mustangs in assists with 22 on the night to go along with three kills and four digs.

Horne and Towery both had 10 aces. Horne also had three kills and four digs. Towery led East Lincoln with nine kills and six blocks.

Spanos said it was a night of mixed emotions.

“Our school was experiencing joy and sadness all at the same time,” he said.

The varsity club finished with a 16-6 record overall and a 14-0 conference record.

The JV team looked to follow in the varsity club’s footsteps by winning the conference championship. But they fell short, losing to the Lady Red Raiders 22-25 and 16-25.

Jessica Glenn led the team in kills with six. She also had two aces and two digs. Ali Fisher had five kills, two aces and two digs.

Krista “Bullet” Abernathy and Courtney Feldon led the club with five assists each.

The East Lincoln JV Lady Mustangs finished the season with a 13-9 overall record and a 12-2 conference mark.
