Going into the Midwest 2A Conference Tennis Tournament the Lincolnton Lady Wolves had two objectives.
They wanted every player to make it to the regionals and then win the tournament. On Thursday, they did both.
Head coach Chris Hoffman was happy with his team.
“These girls made an unbelievable showing. I could not ask for anything more from them. They did a magnificent job this week in a rain-delayed tournament,” he said.
In singles’ play junior Shawn Kindley fought hard to win the conference crown. She won two straight matches to make it to the championship.
Once there, she quickly dismissed Veronica Creed, from Bandys, 6-2 and 6-1.
Junior Anna Carpenter won her opening match easily, but then lost to Creed in a 5-7, 4-6 match sending Carpenter into the consolation rounds.
Carpenter proved to be resilient, despite her second round loss, beating two consecutive opponents to earn a regional bid.
In doubles’ play sophomores Angela Graham and Shelley Stevens fought their way into the semi-finals before being eliminated. They still manged to oust Amanda Hunsucker and Trish
Gaither, the No. 3 seed, from Newton-Conover.
Jessica Newton and Liz Rhyne, both juniors, won their first two matches to advance to the championship against No. 1 seed Carrie Freeman and Britney Godfrey from West Lincoln.
The teams played a three set, three hour match before the seniors, Freeman and Godfrey, took home the title with scores of 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
“Newton and Rhyne gave it their all. The play was incredible by both teams and neither one deserved to lose,” Hoffman said calling it ‘the match of the tournament.’
The Wolves will host Forest Hills on Oct. 14 in the first round of the dual team playoffs.
