What better way for a team to get their first win than to play a team that is 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
That is the scenario for the young North Lincoln Knights team as they are pitted against Highland Tech Friday.
Head coach Lonnie Custer feels that it will be a good ball game.
“You have two teams that have had a tough time this year and two teams that really want to win,” he said.
Custer hopes that playing one of the toughest schedules in the state will help them in the stretch run of the season.
“Hopefully it will prepare us for the games a little better. The kids are chomping at the bit — we’re coming off an open week so our kids should be refreshed,” he said.
Offensively, the Knights want to be physical.
“We got to be more physical then they are. We also have to be able to have a balanced attack,” Custer said.
One thing that failed to happen against Bessemer City was running back Todd Eaton getting a lot of carries. Custer takes full responsibility for that.
“We have to get Todd the ball more. I didn’t do a good job in the last game. We absolutely have to get him more touches,” he said.
On the defensive side of the ball North Lincoln will have to stop an option-oriented offense.
Custer feels that containing the quarterback will be the key.
“If we can contain him then we will be successful. He’s a big, tough kid,” he said.
The Knights will also have to tackle better.
“We have to be more fundamentally sound. We’ve been in the position to make some plays, but missed tackles we want to reverse that trend,” he said.
The Knights are 0-7 entering the ball game and are coming off a 65-10 loss against Bessemer City. Highland Tech is coming off a loss against Polk County.
