Wolves clinch conference

Published October 1, 2003

By JOHN MARK BROOKS, Staff Writer

As the Lincolnton Lady Wolves embarked on this tennis season they had one goal —repeat as the 2A Midwest Conference champions.

Monday they faced Newton-Conover who entering the match was 4-0 in conference play.

That changed as Lincolnton easily dismantled them with a 9-0 score.

Head coach Chris Hoffman was very pleased with the win.

“This was a big win for us. It gave them their first conference loss and at least clinched a piece of the Midwest 2A title,” he said.

With the pressure alleviated the ladies visited East Rutherford on Tuesday.

The result was the same as Monday as they crushed the Lady Cavaliers 9-0.

None of the Cavaliers recorded more than three games in any set from the top to the bottom of the lineup in the Wolves’ dominant effort.

The road win enabled them to reach their goal as they repeated as conference champions.

Hoffman said the goal was not reached without determination.

“The girls totally dominated the East Rutherford netters. I’m very proud of this team,” he said.

The victory not only gave them the Midwest 2A conference crown, but it also gives the Lady Wolves the No. 1 berth in the dual team playoffs.

Lincolnton team members are Kindley, Newton, No. 3 Liz Rhine, No. 4 Anna Carpenter, No.5 Angela Graham, No. 6 Shelley Stevens and Mary Heather Lineberger.

Kindley and Newton played No. 1 doubles, Rhine and Carpenter played No. 2 and Lineberger and Stevens played No. 3 doubles.

The Lady Wolves advance their record to 10-2 overall, with their win on Tuesday, and 6-0 in the conference.

The 2A Midwest conference tournament is up next for the ladies on Oct. 7-8.

“They set a goal to repeat as champions and worked hard to achieve it,” Hoffman said.
