July 1, 2002 - Lincolnton High School rising junior and basketball player Eric
Wilson was selected and recently attended the prestigious Nike basketball camp.
The camp in St. Louis, Mo., was for some of the top prep basketball players in the country. This camp was for rising freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.

July 1, 2002 - The start of the Denver-Asheville Area Four Legion playoff series has been pushed back a
day due to the death of Asheville’s athletic director.
The best three-of-five series, scheduled to open tonight at A.C. Reynolds High School in Asheville, will begin on Tuesday.

July 3, 2002 - It took four hours to complete, but Denver outlasted Asheville 11-8 Tuesday night in the Area
Four playoffs at A.C. Reynolds High in Asheville.
The win gave Denver a 1-0 lead in the best three-of-five series, which continues tonight at A.C. Reynolds High School in Asheville.

Local players win honors at ASU camp

July 5, 2002 - Pumpkin Center and West Lincoln Middle School basketball players Parker French (left) and Taylor Woodie are shown receiving
congratulations from Appalachian State head coach Matt McMahon. The two local athletes won honors at the recent ASU summer camp in Boone. Parker won the overall free throw competition in his division,
while Woodie received awards for winning the "hot shot" and one-one-one" competition. In addition, Woodie was selected as out-standing player for the camp by the coaching staff. Both
players also attended a recent UNC-Charlotte camp, where Woodie won the "hot shot" award and was again named outstanding player in his division.

July 8, 2002 - CHERRYVILLE — The leprechaun’s magic didn’t work for Cherryville Sunday night as Eastern Catawba beat Post 100 2-0 in the deciding Game 5 to
eliminate Cherryville from the American Legion playoffs.
The workers in the Cherryville press box constantly rubbed a small leprechaun statuette, which has a red hat with Post 100 and two cherries on it.

July 8, 2002 - Hickory, the American Legion Area 4 top-seeded team, defeated Denver 5-0 Sunday night in
the opening game of the third round.
Brock Thornburg struck out 10 to get the win while Denver’s David Rue held Hickory to just two runs for most of the game. Bradley Dalrymple struck out two in
relief.

Top-seeded Hickory ends Denver season in three games
July 10, 2002 - HICKORY — Simply put, Hickory’s American Legion team was just too much for Denver Post 455.
Hickory, 23-4, beat Denver 10-1 Tuesday to sweep Post 455 in three games and become the first team from Area 4 to make the semifinals.

County Hall of Fame looking for nominees

July 12, 2002 - The Lincoln County Sports Hall of Fame is again seeking nominations for inductees into
the Lincoln County Sports Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame was established in August of 2000 to honor, recognize and memorialize individuals for their excellence and remarkable achievements that have
contributed to Lincoln County's rich sports history and community endeavors.

July 15, 2002 - DENVER — Cherryville’s in the driver’s seat in the Girls 10-and-under Dixie
Fast-Pitch Softball State Tournament at East Lincoln Optimist Park.
Cherryville is the only team in the tournament that hasn’t been beaten. The girls beat Burgaw 23-3 in their first game Saturday, beat Dunn 13-5 in
their second game and Sunday, they slipped past South Stanly 4-2.

East Lincoln Optimist Park over the weekend.
Now it’s Monday and just the final four of the 10-and-under and the 12-and-under teams remain.

Rebels basketball coach optimistic after summer workouts

July 15, 2002 - Jason Kingery has a plan to improve the boys basketball program at West
Lincoln High School.
One phase of it is a strong summer workout program.
“I think that the more games you play, the better you get,” said Kingery, who is entering his second year at the helm of the Rebels. “I don’t think
there has been a lot of summer ball played here before. But the kids liked it. It helped their confidence.”

That’s right. Soon it will be time for local high school players to tightened up the chin strap and pop some pads.
Monday, July 29, is the first official day of football practice.
At West Lincoln, Coach Butch Parker is getting ready for his first football season for the Rebels.
